Why do you need to format?

Backup is a good idea.

It depends on your needs and applications if you want to have a single partition of multiple partitions.

I need format because the computer day after day turns more slow. And I suspect some malware.. But really computer needs format! A good clean.

I have some heavy applications like Photoshop, Macromedia, etc etc.

Before you do anything, you need to find your XP product ID.
It should be on a sticker on the laptap, or under it.

You may want to look into your manuals and instruction sheets that came with your computer for instructions for "System Restore".
It may be helpful.

Drivers should be on your CDs. You should also be able to get the latest drivers by going to the Compaq website. It is a good idea to have all the drivers before you start the restore process, specially the driver for your network card!

Then, go to your bios and set it to boot from the CD. Put the XP CD in the CD drive and reboot.
Follow the prompts. It will ask you for the product ID.
It will give you the option of formating.

After windows is installed, you will have to install your drivers. Then, you will have to activate XP. Then, you can restore your applications.

Edit:
Don't forget to go to "Windows Update" to get the latest updates for XP.

Don't forget to turn on the Windows Firewall for your internet connection before you connect to the net after re-install. (Or use third party software/hardware firewall)

IT APPEARS THAT BELOW FOR DRIVERS...

My modem (which is inside notebook) was gone... so it doesn´t necessary to download modem drivers... But if I doesn´t have a drive of floppy disk... just a combo drive CD... I suppose that I must save it to a CD-R... right? Where, after, can I put these new drivers??? Please tell me more about that.

Windows Update... I used to go there.

So, after backup, get up all drivers (almost all should be on CDs...), update for a CD-R the last drivers on link that I gave... after, I´m going to Bios ( I suppose that I must press delete when I reiniciate XP... and I ask for Format C: ... NTFS...), then the format I put the CD? or isn´t it? Please, be patient... and tell me more:What else can I do? Thanks for your help

Where have you backed up your data?
You should back up your data (pictures, movies, emails, PDF files, Word documents, Photoshop projects, ...........) on to CDs. If you have backed up your data on the hard drive, that is not good!
After you format, all on the hard drive will be gone!

Forget all I told you about the format and installation.

Follow the instructions on this link for "Factory Restore".
