We have moved into 4th place on Eon and now have 12 points and 103 points overall!

Thanks to deerslayer and GLeeM for jumping in on Eon. :thumbsup:

If there's anywhere else I can help let me know. I don't mind switching a few things around. I might switch my FX-6300 over to Eon soon.

Watch your back GLeeM
I'm going to get to 10K and move to something higher paying.

I can't believe what a points hog I have become D: I feel cheated if the points aren't greater than one percent of the seconds the WU takes!

But if I want better BOINC Milestone stats I have to crunch more projects to new levels

More, MOre, MORe, MORE!!

I have been gradually shutting off BOINC on my office machines over the past few months to cut down on a pretty hefty power bill there, but this thread is making me tempted to turn them all back on again. 24 machines running i3 and i5 CPUs with (mostly) Intel HD graphics could make a difference, but it also makes a big difference on the power bill, too...

Same post time!

How about shutting the i3 rigs right off & running BOINC on just a few i5s?

I've considered that, too, Assimiliator. The problem is that if I start putting it back on any I'll want to do it on ALL of them.

And there are actually only a few i3 rigs so eliminating just those won't make a huge difference. Most of the computers are 3rd and 4th generation i5 systems.

However, I AM trying to convince myself to just run BOINC on them anyway, so I've been doing some rough figuring. I'll post my results here in part so I can look at them, and also so you folks can tell me if I'm way off or not.

Using a power supply calculator, I estimate that the i5 computers should be pulling somewhere around 170-200 watts (for the whole system) when running at 100% and about 80-90 watts without BOINC (actual office use is pretty light on the system resources). My rate is 9.89 cents per kilowatt, which, if my math is right, means it costs about $156 per year to run one system at 100% 24/7, and about $23 per year to just have it on (and not running BOINC) during business hours and asleep or off the rest of the time. $133 more for a year doesn't seem like much, but multiplied by the 24 computers it adds up pretty quick.

On the other hand, if I just let BOINC run during business hours while the computers have to be on anyway, that would cost about $52 per year instead of $23 to have them doing almost nothing. An extra $29 per year (times 24) doesn't hurt the bank balance as much as $133, but it also wouldn't produce nearly as much BOINC work and has the potential to interfere with our stupid, unfriendly, poorly written (but the only available option) insurance agency management software...

I'll have to think about it some more to talk myself into doing it.

Where are you located? If you have to heat the office in the winter, you can practically ignore cost during those months? If you have to air condition during summer then don't run BOINC during those months?

I see to remember Eon gives you 2x ppd if your OS is linux. Not sure if that's true anymore but I can test it if you'd like. I can reboot my 3930K into windows and test it.

yup 30-40% slower in windows. They must have compiled it w/o some of the optimizations.

In VMware running Ubuntu I am getting 1.2 percent of seconds for points!

In Win7 I get 0.5 percent

Now how do I increase the work buffer? I only get about 1 WU ahead. And too often there are no WUs available from the server.

Edit: Are there other projects that do better in Linux?

There's no way I know of to increase the work buffer. It doesn't play well with other CPU projects either.

They claim in the GPUGrid forums that WUs in linux have about a 10% advantage in crunch time but I've never tested it. However there's no method for overclocking Nvidia cards in linux so I guess it's a wash.

I don't remember if there is an advantage/disadvantage of currently active projects. But I'll think about it.

OK, so I'm going to toss a few (or maybe more) i5 systems back online. Now to decide which project(s) to let them run...

edit: I ended up compromising with myself and put BOINC on the eight i5 machines that usually stay turned on all of the time since those users often connect from outside the office both during and after business hours. They're turned on anyway (and idle for a lot of that time) so they might as well get put to work, at least until the weather starts getting warm again. I'll have to revisit the power bill at that time...

We've moved into 3rd place on Eon (15 points)!

We have lost points on other project(s). I'm not sure which one though.

I'll keep my 3930K on Eon but I've moved my 2600K to Yafu. They have a multithreaded app so one WU is using 7 cores. I have one core dedicated to feed my GPU on GPUGrid. This is my first time on Yafu so we'll see how it goes.

Primaboinca we went from 5th to 6th
Rosetta from 4th to 5th
Yafu from 7th to 8th.

I'm going off GLeeM's post on 2-6-14.

My computers are running WCG and YOYO, mostly to get my next milestones in those projects, but also because we're only just outside the top 10 on both at the moment. In the couple of days they have been running, we've moved from 13 to 11 in YOYO and 13 to 12 in WCG. I'm pretty sure the WCG change wasn't just me, but as far as I can tell we don't have much production in YOYO right now. I probably won't run these projects long term, but might have enough to get us to #10 or better before I get to 2.5mil credits (Free-DC milestone).

Once I hit some new milestones in a few projects, I'll focus on projects that have the biggest potential for points.

I switched my FX-8320 to Yafu for a bit to see how it does on that. I'll probably keep floating that CPU around to different projects.

Does skynet pogs help much?

Currently we are 28th place and more than a million points out of 10th place. If that's one of your favorite projects then go ahead and crunch away.

I was wondering why my Yafu points weren't showing up in the Free-DC stats and then I realized I forgot to join Team Anandtech.

Rookie mistake! :biggrin:

So we only get points if the team is in the top 10? I might switch over to Asteroids@home again if that's the case. I hit 1 million in it and then moved over to another astronomy project.

That is correct.

Formula Boinc points :

1st = 25 points FB
2nd = 18 points FB
3rd = 15 points FB
4th = 12 points FB
5th = 10 points FB
6th = 8 points FB
7th = 6 points FB
8th = 4 points FB
9th = 2 points FB
10th = 1 point FB
