Hey there all!

We've upgrade the forums!

• A Question and Answer style option that will now serve as the default setting in any tech-support related areas of the forum. You can still specify a new thread as a discussion, but most threads posted in tech areas will be inquiries on fixes that can now have a Solution provided to them by the original poster, or through general voting.

• Prefixes are now available to help sort and review thread content quicker and more cleanly.

• Newly registering users are now prompted with an option to follow certain categories in the forum that they are most interested in.

• Similar Threads has made a return, providing users with threads related to the thread they are currently reviewing.

Please let me know if you happen to bump into any problems, and I'll collect feedback on outstanding bugs/issues here in this thread.

Thanks all!

Yours,
-JP

And we've suddenly lost the link at the bottom of each forum page that get's us back to the
entire thread list for each forum. Hooray.

Edit: and the links are back.

I second this complaint.
I had actually gotten familiar with using that navigation bar after reading to the bottom of a thread.

There are other interesting nuances to this updated theme.

Looks like approximately zero suggestions or complaints have been addressed.

I see one or two small cosmetic changes and the absolutely worthless changes mentioned in the OP. The user interface is every bit as broken as it was yesterday. Why don't you hire the people who created this theme to come in and fix all the things your people have screwed up? Someone working on a desktop should not be forced to use a damned touchscreen interface.

And yeah, you also lost the breadcrumbs at the bottom.

Small thing, but the "Home" button on the bottom of this page (under Links) returns you to the forum home page instead of Anandtech.com

That's been broken since the last upgrade. Same as the top logo link not going to AnandTech and the home icon in the breadcrumbs.

Looks like the desktop interface kicks in at something like 1200 pixels screen width. Is that the only means you have at your disposal of trying to figure out if if a user is using a touch interface? Surely, there's a more intelligent way. Or just offer different skins.

I see two positive cosmetic changes. The pinned threads are now offset from the real threads (like it was before the first attempt at upgrading) and there are no more needless text descriptions of forums on the forums page.

Screen resolution browser size has become the industry standard for responsive CSS and creating a single website for both desktop and mobile. They might be hard pressed to get around that in favor of anything else.

OTOH, an alternative "Desktop only" theme would be possible. Not sure anyone would make it though.

Define "successful"? The forums didn't burn down, fall over and then sink into the swamp, so perhaps that's a win if you set the bar low. What happened to the new, slightly less noxious themes that were briefly visible and have now disappeared entirely?

What themes are missing from the current version of the forum update? The same themes that were here are still here for me (default and dark).

I believe you're correct. There was a 'default' theme up for the first day or two of the last upgrade that was most likely the uncustomized theme that someone forgot to remove.

Correct. Browser windows size, not screen size.

So, what happens in a year or two when phone and tablet screens get bumped to the next level of screen resolution? Does everyone have to deal with buttons? There has to be a better way.

A "desktop" theme would be as simple as changing that cutoff number. Say 800, instead of 1200. I wonder it it might even be a configuration option for the themes that Purch spent $70 on.

No, there were about 4 or 5 new, different themes added today that were visible and usable once the "upgrade" was finished. They were all removed shortly afterward. All or most were based on the UIX2 style.

Fixed - Got a new, annoying bug with the forum since the update.

The top nav bar, the one always visible. Well now it flickers every single time I press enter while composing or editing a post. Heck, it does so several times as I press "edit".

This is new behavior, unexpected, 100% repeatable, and is terribly annoying. Like one of those 90's websites with a large flashing banner. Using Firefox 64 on Windows 10. Also happens on Chrome 71.

It's happening for me as well. It happens when you resize the window. Will bug this up for a fix.

As for themes, AnandTech standard and Dark should be available at current. We can add additional themes (as recommended) fairly easily, but are working to get all the add-ons in place that need to be in place first.
