Freakin' Word Runtime Error!

So, here it is, don't know where it came from, but it happens, and it's pissing me off. Whenever I'm in Word 2003 for an extended period of time, it crashes with a "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" Error.

So that's about it. It also doesn't seem to like opening documents off of Hotmail as the error comes up nearly everytime someone tries to do that. What is going on here?

I saw this error a lot on systems with AOL and EFax installed. Removal and Reinstallation on E-Fax fixed it.

As far as I know I don't have E-fax and I know I don't have AOL. Is E-fax an add on that someone might have installed on my computer? (it's a family comp) And how do I find if it's on here?

Does the same thing happen if you run in safe mode?

Ohh well I don't have e-fax then, thought it might have been something a little more obscure. I haven't tried running it in safe mode. spose I should.

You could try a Repair of Office 2003 .. And also go to microsoft and
be sure you have the latest Visual C version / updates. Does it happen
even with a blank Word Doc ? Or only if you are opening a .doc that
someone else sends you ? If the latter, I would suspect either the sender's
computer is not up to date as far as Visual C updates.

If all else fails... switch to openoffice

It is common with Word program errors that the normal.dot file, which Word uses as its base template for each individual user, has become corrupt. Do a search of hidden and system files for normal.dot, and rename the one under your profile, to normal.old. Windows will recreate the file the next time you launch Word.

No it does it with both documents that I make and documents that open from other senders. I got halfway into a paper on Vietnam and had it crash. That didn't go well with me. I'll try the two things you guys mentioned and see how they work, thankfully I get a brief reprieve from papers after writing this last one.

A couple of other things.

I've seen a number of issues with Office fixed by applying the latest service pack. For 2003 that is SP3.

When you find the normal.dot file, explore the folder it is contained in and see if there are numerous temp files named ~ormal.dot, or something to that effect. Delete these temp files. I have seen some odd behavior with Word when there were multiple ~ temp files in that folder.

I've had the same problem and continue to - but not as often. I did the .dot thing and that worked for a while. I thought it corrected the problem but it came back again. I do see those weird temp files and never knew what they were. I'll try the suggestion also.

Dont feel too bad. Notepad has given me a couple BSODs over the years.
