thanks to all that offered advice. the end result was, no dice on windows 2000. now, the version of windows 2k that i have is the one that comes as a universal msdn subscriber. it's build number is 2195. it is positively, not stable on my system (kt7a-raid and 1.2/266 tbird). i tried it at 1200/133fsb as well as just about every other configuration with only 100fsb (900/100fsb). no dice. hangs either less than a minute into the desktop, or during boot. it also seems to take a long time to bring up directories or explorer windows on drives....
are there any faq's for installing w2k on a via chipset board? if so, post em please.
so, on a whim, i figured "ok, *#!!@ lets see how you react to this..." and shoved my old 30G w98 (it's hardware config was intel BX, be6-II r2 and a cell566@850) driver in as a bootdisk. well, it went thru the usual 'new hardware detected' stuff, and at first i didn't have a cd-rom recognized in windows. so i chose ignore for most of the drivers. surprisingly, it found a number of drivers in the /system directory. after it had detected and installed what drivers it could, i rebooted and got the network card working. down'd the via 4-1 drivers and isntalled them. rebooted. and what do you know, the damn thing works!! i realize this is not the optimal setup, and do not recommend anyone do this, but i needed network connectivty to download the needed drivers. i have them on cd, but the damn cd didn't detect right away under windows.
for the record, this cpu is running at 43c and about 45 under load (quake3, black and white, unreal tournament). called my neighbor over and we lan gamed for over 5 hours on it. it's a mwave setup with their sh_TTY hs and fan. doubt they even put paste under the heatsink (somethign i intend to check on soon, after i decide the machine and cpu are stable).
one other thing, i had setup the bios to the default voltage of 1.75 for cpu core. however in via hardware monitor as well as motherboard monitor, the core voltage was just over 1.8, like 1.83. at the time the temp was about 45c idle. so i changed the voltage from default to user-defined, and set it at 1.70, to take into account the inaccuracy. now the cpu temp is lower, 43c, and mm and via hm report 1.76. and it's stable so far.
still going to wrestle with win2k on this setup. any advice is appreciated.
