I use Norton because it has been tested (either PC Magazine or PC Weekly) as using the fewest system resources, but EZ Antivirus is top-notch. For those that don't know, the parent company, Computer Associates, would actually dwarf Symantec or any of the other players in the antivirus field.

It's been a while since I looked into this, but AVG is not 100% fullproof -- there is a site that was using a randomly selected set of 100 viruses, and AVG was one of the only programs that didn't catch them all.

As many of you may know, Norton 2003 can be installed on multiple machines as there is no serial. Just for your info... Norton 2004 has a unique serial.

And, I hear, activation crap like WinXP. Maybe 2004 is a good time to stop buying Norton.

Maybe 2004 is a good time to stop buying Norton.

Norton 2003 can be reinstalled with a new 1-year subscription by uninstalling via Control Panel, then deleting the "LiveUpdate" folders on your hard drive, then reinstalling. Norton 2002 and previous, I believe you simply uninstall/reinstall.

Again, just giving out useless information, not advice. . . Note that the update files for Norton are the same at least back through 2000, so the new versions don't protect you against extra viruses (although they may be more efficient, or have extra features, such as adding an extra layer of un-delete to your Recycle Bin).

After a bunch of Trojans went right through Norton like a broken condom, I switched to AVG 7 and nothing has gotten through yet. I test this by running an updated trojan finder like Tauscan or TDS-3 trojan defense suite.

I'll try this one too.

My experience is that Norton is one of the least agggresive AV's. McAffee is better for instance.
Often Norton will say it can't repair the file. This may be because repairing the file would retard other operations, I don't know.

Zone Alarm is another story. I use Zone Alarm ver. 2.6.362, which I believe is the last good version. Versions 3.xx absolutely suck for several reasons:

agreed - they send you urgent emails to upgrade , when you go ahead then all of a sudden your local machines can't see each other,
even with endless tinkering-grrr

This isn't true, the new versions do have new protection features.

Computer Associates, would actually dwarf Symantec or any of the other players in the antivirus field.

CA is another 50% larger than SYMC, so I think dwarf is a little bit of an exageration...

Free is usually a good price - can this run in parallel to other virus scanners or is it better to turn them off?

I wouldn't recommend trying to run 2 anti-virus programs with real-time virus checking on the same system.
