Here is my situation.. I would appreciate any advice that you guys can offer.
I got an email saying that I was 'approved' for the promotion going on.. what I want DSL for is to run a web server. I have registered 3-4 domain names and plan on running IIS, Exchange Server and have those 3-4 domains going on the server machine. I wanted to also have at most 20 or so email accounts per domain, so not too many there.. maybe 1-2 listserves as well. Mostly, the purpose of the sites were to share w/ my friends and not worry about the message length or inbox limits (like yahoo's 6mb) and have a central spot to have files stored.
Now, as for winfire.. I would probably go for the 34.95/mo deal. Here are the details: 13 month committment, first month free.. free modem (internal for win98 and external for all others). The kit they send out I would install myself (how hard is it to install? ) No charge for modem or installation.
Now, I know I need a static IP, but they said they would be providing this in a few months.. they don't offer it now. Will they ever? Also, in the case that they do offer it later, how much more would it be? The customer service rep had no details on this at all. Also, in the case that I break the 13 month contract, they will charge me the 34.95 for the remaining months left or $200 - whichever is less. I would also get to keep the modem.
I also found out that I am about 5600 ft from the CO. I hope this is accurate, I found this out from another company. Anyhow, the rep said that if I am that close, I should be able to get the 1.5 downstream and 384k upstream pretty consistently. They also provide a free dialup when I am not at home and also 5 email accounts.. but email of course isn't really practical since i plan on running my own mail server.
Now for questions I have...
Questions
1) What would be the min. system requirements for the server, ram, cpu, etc? How about what would be decent requirements for the server?
2) How could I go about circumventing the necessary static IP? Are there rerouting/forwarding services or would I just never reboot to maintain the IP?
3) Anyone hear if winfire is good/bad, comments?
4) How realistic is the static IP thing in the future?
5) For those that have winfire, how big is this 'minimal ad bar' ? Also, how reliable has the service been?
I look forward to all comments and help.. thanks in advance!
