Free ebooks from Baen Books

My first Hot Deal! I did a search and didn't find any references to it.

Baen Books is offering some of their titles for free download in HTML, MS Reader, RTF, Rocket ebook, and PDA formats. Baen specializes in Science Fiction and Fantasy. I've seen other booksites offer free ebooks, but most of those titles are old classics and out of copyright. Baen offers some fairly recent titles for free.

It takes a little getting used to, but I've read several books on my Palm V. It's great for when you're traveling and don't want to pack a bunch of paperbacks.

Also, those of you with visually handicapped friends with electronic voice readers may want to pass this information along.

I personally recommend anything by David Drake.

I liked his book of short stories. I think it was called Hammers Slammers. This is off topic but has anyone read Douglas Adams new book yet?

Hammer's Slammers was his first book. If you can find the rest of the series (prolly in a used bookstore)
you'll really like them -- he's learned a lot since then.

Very true. From the site: "How many people who are low on cash and for that reason depend on libraries or personal loans later rise on the economic ladder and then buy books by the very authors they came to love when they were borrowing books?"

I first read Heinlein from a Bookmobile that visited a one-room country schoolhouse in the late 40s; I have since bought several copies each of everything he ever had published. Multiply that by several million poor country boys over the decades and you are talking a fair piece of change!

Don't bother robbing me, twit. I will cheerfully put up the stuff for free myself. Because I am quite confident that any "losses" I sustain will be more than made up for by the expansion in the size of my audience.

For me to worry about piracy would be like a singer in a piano bar worrying that someone might be taping the performance in order to produce a pirate recording. Just like they did to Maria Callas!

Sheesh. Best thing that could happen to me. . .

That assumes, of course, that the writer in question is producing good books. "Good," at least, in the opinion of enough readers. That is not always true, of course. But, frankly, a mediocre writer really doesn't have to worry about piracy anyway.

Sorry, sometimes the link doesn't work. You can try refreshing it or trying at another time. It basically gives you info on how to download all kinds of ebooks (copyrighted and otherwise) from mIRC. In mIRC's command line type:
/server us.undernet.org
and after connection: /join #bookz

I tried mIRC for the first time myself yesterday and after messing around with it long enough (half an hour), I was downloading all kinds of great stuff, ie Catch-22, Catcher in the Rye, etc, etc...

Anyway, best of luck...

Wow this is GREAT. I didn't realize baen had that. Now I get a chance to read some of those books I was wondering about. And they have the first couple chapters from War of Honor that's coming out this fall. Woot! Thanks tons for the link. Now I'll have to see if I can get this stuff onto my palm II somehow after I dig it up.
