Microsoft has a lot of programs, but the school has to buy into them. I don't think my school offers this yet, but Microsoft is generally trying to push this on everyone to get marketshare where they can. Just keep in mind that as soon as you stop taking classes, your license expires. (in accordance with the ALA)

The calstate university system used to have everything for $20. Then they had to renegotiate a new 4 year contract and MS forced them to raise prices to $60 each for windows/office, etc.
However, if you taking a computer science class, (its on a per campus basis so this may not be the same for some calstates), at my university they allow you to get free copies of windows (with unique serial) from the MSDNAA thingy.

Here's the Microsoft site to do a search for the school. If your school doesn't show, you can just leave the school info blank and just select the state. There will be alot of hits. You'll have to page through them then. A problem some may run into before you can get the software is that you need to be enrolled into a particular curriculum. At the top of the page that comes back for your school, click on support to see who to contact about getting an account. The school my wife goes to has XP w/SP2 ISO for a free download and they will issue you a CD key.

No go at Florida schools save FIT. All of them offer software at rediculous prices.

Hehe maybe it's because students there can't spell ridiculous . Anyways, here at UF they definetly offer Win XP Pro, MS Office, and even Windows Server 2000 for free for students.

Bah, this is what happens when you go to public schools and hang around a bunch of moron, spelling does down the drain
Shoulda gone to Columbia when I had the chance but I couldn't afford it and still can't... Perhaps I could've recovered the cost of tuition if they(columbia) had cheap computer software

Anyways can't beat going to a school which pays you to go there even after a full ride scholarship

I'm a student administrator for the MSDNAA program at my school's computer science department (NMSU CS.

Just for some useful information, the MSDNAA program provides downloadable ISOs of almost all "developer-related" software titles for free. Hard copy CDs can also be ordered for a very cheap price (e.g. $10 for all if VS.net 2003). The software has to be developer related, so software like Microsoft Office is NOT included in this (but Windows XP, Server 2003, VS.net, etc are)

For my school (I'm pretty sure it applies to the entire MSDNAA program) a student can download software through their department's MSDNAA program if they are part of that department, such as a declared major. Once they have the software, it is personally theirs forever, and can be used once they've finished school. However, like most academic licenses, you're not permitted to make money via the license (no selling it, no creating software with VS.net academic and selling said software, etc).

My school is similar -- just by taking an electrical/computer engineering class, i'm eligible to download all sorts of Developer (xp pro, 2k3 enterprise, sql server, exchange server, Vs.NET, etc etc etc), but also no office. I could only get one copy (key) for xp pro though :-/

And I'll second your interpretation of the license -- you can keep it as long as you want.

I think you are supposed to inform MS when you graduate from your university. I could be wrong, but they are supposed to issue full licenses and you should be allowed to do anything you want with the software after that.

Heh, you'd think that UCF's computer science department would offer a good list of software. Not only do you get only four items, but none of them are downloadable. Yet, if you check the Education department, they have a much larger assortment of good software and downloadable content to boot. How silly.

A couple of relevant answers from their FAQ, edited for quick reading.
Q: Can I install my software on two computers at once?
A: Yes, as long as you are the owner of both computers and both are being used for instructional purposes. NOTE: If you require another key for a product you must contact your program administrator. Also, friends, family and colleagues not currently enrolled in a course that is part of an MSDNAA department are not allowed to access or use the software available from this website.

Q: I have a new computer now, how can I re-install my software?
A: You are allowed to install the software more than once based at the discretion of the program administrator and the software distribution method chosen.

Q: Is the software permanently unlocked by the license (or "key")?
A: No - the key allows you to install the software once. Also, if you need to re-install the software, you will need to contact your program administrator.

Q: What products are currently available for purchase?
A:If the Program Administrator for MSDNAA has enabled CD Media Sales as a delivery type in this system, these products will be listed in the Storefront located under the Software button.

When a student purchases a product under this program, the product becomes the property of the student. The product will not terminate or expire simply by virtue of the termination, suspension, or other interruption of the student's status as an enrolled student.
Only thing interesting for me from my school (UWP) is Windows XP Pro. I may talk to our program admin (already met her) to inquire about it.

My school still says I am active even though I did nothing last quarter so I am gonna try, I need XP PRO bad, and for $12 for 32 and 64 bit together it would only be better if it was free.
Even if i am denied for not being active i got till tomarrow to register for a bs class to get it, and since my classes are free due to HOPE I can't go wrong ;p
