I don't have their text messaging plan so I'm charged for every text incoming and out. Anyone know if it's free if I send one from their website? No indicators either way that I can see... experiences?

THIS IS AN OLD THREAD, CHECK THE DATE, OK BYE.

You can use the Verizon web site to send texts even if you are not a Verizon customer, and you will/cannot be charged as they still have not figured out how to vacuum your wallet over the net. AFAIR you can only send to Verizon customers and they will be charged per the plan they have.

yeap. they charge FOR EVERYTHING. want a app to get email on the phone? $20 a month. even though every other place gives it to you free. ringtones? $1.99-4.99 and don't think you can just get them free on the net. nope the phones are locked down.

i have been happy with Verizions service. but hate how they charge for everything.

Yeah if Verizon's network coverage and speed was available on other networks I would have been gone... Oh and my friends are mostly on Verizon.

Yes, it's free for you. You can also send text messages from your e-mail address and receive them back. You just need to know what plan the person has then look up the extension to use. For example, T-Mobile numbers are 1##########@tmomail.net (unless this has changed recently). I found a site once that has all the extensions listed... try google.

EDIT: Here

It's pretty easy to unlock some of the models so you can use free ringtones. Of course, I no longer have to worry about this since I'm using a BlackBerry on Verizon. I just wish the damn GPS wasn't locked out. That really pisses me off.

There are ways around the ringtones.

AT&T is excellent. 3G is excellent. Verizon is for people who never understood that unlocked phones, GSM, and real smartphones lie with AT&T (and by that I mean unbranded phones but rather the phones the rest of the world use).

no i understand that and choose verizon b/c for whatever reason AT&T gives me 0 bars in my own house and for about 100 feet outside. Im sorry but in the year 2008, 3G or no 3G, thats unacceptable. So I stick with verizon b/c the only place it hasnt worked for me has been in the mountains of New York

You need Cricket man. Free texts and voice. And @ $35/month I get 2.5GB of data. Plenty for me.

What's so unbelievable is that a simple text cost the carriers diddly squat as the text message is sent over the control channel. To educate those that don't know what the CC is. It's the channel your phone monitors constantly to know what channel to talk and use data on and to know what cell to hand off to. Pretty much the same standard as a trunked radio system like P25, Motorola Smartzone, EDACS, etc.

Buy a cheap freedompop phone for $20, then downgrade after ur month is over, equals free unlimited texting and decent Sprint 4G service.
