No new suggestions for programs.

So here's some... 46 Freeware Programs

BTW: I am looking for two "free" programs:

1.) A backup utility that allows me to burn a CDRW every night of data that is worked on everyday.
2.) A free "email server" utility. Just something for inter-office mail. (Windows XP)

Thanks, hMail Server looks promising.

I had a who wanted a server just to be able to run programs off of and store data on it. So I got XP Pro, good enough for that. Then after I have it all setup, he is like "oh yeah! we had inter-office email" WTF! I would have got small business server. They did have Windows 95 PTP something or another running.

WS-FTP LE by IPSwitch.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this. Its basically the same version released in the mid-late 90's that many of used but didn't register. Although old, its small, fast, and reliable.

And its free for non-commercial use. From the license...

"Ipswitch grants you a non-exclusive license to use the Software free of charge if a) you are a student, faculty member or staff member of an educational institution (K-12, junior college, college or university); b) you are a United States federal, state or local government employee; or c) your use of the Software is exclusively at home for non-commercial purposes. "

Thanks, but there's already two FTP clients listed. WSFTP LE's interface is getting a little antiquated.

is TDS-3 really free or crippled or shareware? my subscription to the Cleaner 3.5 just went up and was wondering how the two stacked up.

Hmm..... it looks like has an evaluation period. I guess I'll take it off the list. Thanks.

Neither will let you make RAR files but they can extract RAR files just fine. AlZip is free but has a small, unintrusive ad banner. IZArc doesn't have an ad banner.
Do you recommend IZArc solely on the fact of the # of formats it can decompress? IMO, I don't think I'll ever come across many of the those formats, so the most important factor for me is ease of use. WinZip is very easy to me (BTW, WZ 9 is out) and I don't see how it could be any easier (?), so I look for ones similar to WZ but with support for more of the common formats. Ultimate Zip seems to fit that bill, as does Power Archiver, WinRAR, and I guess WinAce.

None of those except UltimateZip are free though and UltimateZip has a nag screen. Most of those products are pretty much the same in terms of usability so I'll go with whatever is free.

About the warez issue

I think that productivity programs such as Photoshop and office will always be somewhat pirated because they are expensive and they are items that are easily fesible to pirate. What do i mean by that? When you install photoshop, apply all those dirty things and bam you have a working, fully functional copy of photoshop.

Games however are a completely different issue. They're much more harder to pirate. They usually run upwards of 2gb (unreal 2k4 requires 6 cds, imagine trying to dl that) and they have more protection. You have to apply cracks and patches. Even after all that, you can't play the game online. You have to have a valid cd key and if you don't, you'll find yourself frantically trying to searching for cracked servers that don't require cd-checks.

Its alot more trouble pirating games versus programs. At some point, im sure microsoft will find a fool-proof way to prevent piraters either by implementing stricter protection (not their weak activation system) or by compelling end users to actually buy it by lowering their prices.
