My old computer:
MSI K8N Neo2
Athlon XP 3200+
4x512mb PC3200 DDR RAM
Gigabyte GeForce 7600GS AGP, (also tried FX5200)
SB Audigy
Powered by Zalman 400W PSU
160gb Seagate (PATA), 74gb WD Raptor (SATA)
2xDVD+/-RW drives
1 memory card reader
Computer freezes up (completely stuck, sometimes sound loops 1 sec over and over, mouse unresponsive) most of the time after playing a variable amount of Warcraft 3 (really the only game I've played). This happens both in Vista and XP (dual boot) which indicates to me a hardware problem. Occasionally, it will also freeze right when Windows splash screen is coming up.
I've run Memtest86 without errors, and chkdsk. I tried both of the above video cards, thinking it was the problem, but both cause problems. I have a hunch it is a video problem, because I am able to encode videos overnight and run CPU intensive calculations for days at a time without freezing. However, both cards (the 7600GS is brand new) give the same problem. Nvidia stability test causes a crash as well within 30 minutes.
Is this more of an overheating issue? I've tried running with an additional video card fan and still got a freeze. Tried with the case open, still no luck. I'd like to check the temperature when it freezes but don't know how to get a good log of the temperatures right when it freezes. I did notice the GPU was running around 70-80C when the nvidia stability test was running.
I have removed and reinstalled new drivers, BIOS up to date, this system was stable for a few years before this started happening (with the FX5200).
Is my PSU not powerful enough? 400W with the 12V rail at only 15A, I know it is pretty old but I don't have that much running. Do I just need more fans? (Have 80mm intake fan in the front, 2 going out the back plus the PSU fan, but admittedly all my fans are more quiet than powerful).
Thanks for any help.
