Fried PSU -- what next?

So I tried installing OSX x86 on my PC and it just shut down after the first couple introduction screens.. I didn't think anything of it and left it alone until the next day.
When I powered it on, nothing happened. So I thought I might have blown a port on my surge protector or something like that, so I switched it to a new surge protector on a different outlet... That's when the sparks started flying. I don't know from where, all I could see was the inside of the case light up and then that horrible burning smell.
I went out and bought a replacement PSU, an Antec Neo550, to see what was salvageable and all I plugged in was the 24pin and 4 pin motherboard power headers. The motherboard light went on, and when I hit power, the CPU fan kicked up for a second and then immediately died down. I'm thinking it tripped something again and that's why the power didn't stay on. Anyone have suggestions on where I should go from here?

Here's my rig:
Opteron 144 1.8GHz@2.6GHz
DFI NF4 SLI Infinity
2GB RAM Corsair 2x1024 XMS C2PT
eVGA GeForce 7800GT
Antec TruePower550 Watt EPS12V PSU

But the motherboard light goes on when I plug in the new PSU? I don't think it would do that if it were fried.

Edit: What makes you think it wasn't the PSU that fried? Also, can anyone suggest what might have caused this?

Just because the light flicks on doesn't mean that the board is still good. Your PSU went nuts and started flucuating voltages that it was feeding to your motherboard, which killed it. It's possible something else went out though, if you have another system where you can swap parts in and out to test each one that may help.

Do you see POST? or a BIOS screen when the PC boots or does the monitor stay black?

I switched out just about everything; turns out my opteron died. I had a 3200+ I was waiting to ebay so I'll pop that in for the time being. Thanks for the suggestions, all.
