I say let him keep the HP and learn from the mistake. Mebbe he'll be like me and never ever buy a pre-built system ever again and opt to build his own in the future.

Does anyone have the address of the place that installs AGP slots?

I'd like to get a 2nd one installed so I can run my Ti4200 and 9700Pro at the same time.

The first computer I owned was an HP. After about 9 months I realized I wanted to upgrade to a PII and found out it was gonna be a little harder than the nice salesman had let on. I even called HP support and asked them how I could put a pentium 2 in my computer, as in nobody made LPX form factor motherboards. The guy's answer was " Oh, you should be able to upgrade it however you want- they are very upgradable."
If he already bought the computer then just install the game on it and feel the pain. PCI graphics cards may be acceptable in a making the best of a bad situation type way, but it will be a headace in the longrun (like when he wants to play a 3d game). It sucks only having the bottom level of graphics card to chose from because that is all that is available in pci format, if he is a gamer as you said then in a year he will be kicking himself. It sounds like price was the factor here, as others stated you can get a computer with a bit more potential and most likely in the same price range from somewhere like Dell. It is almost impossible to change someone's mind if the are deal/price fixated, that is why you will have to show him a better choice at a comperable price.

Why didn't he buy a HP with AGP slot at first?

HP/Compaq, IBM, Dell all offer some models with 845G = with AGP slot.

If he absolutely HAS to get that HP, then the 9000 PCI is a decent upgrade from the integrated graphics. That is what I currently use and it makes gaming passable at 800x600x32. If the case is large enough to accomadate the Hercules 9000 PCI card, then that is a better choice, because it outperforms the Powercolor version. Or, for about the same price, the AIW VE PCI is decent, plus you get all the extra AIW goodies (the AIW also cleans house over the PC 9000 PCI).

MUHAHAHAHAA LOOOOOLL WEEEEEH ROFL..

ahem, how dumb can one get?? This is great.

TO FRIEND: You have been screwed sir, yes you have been absolutely conned into getting a box that does not suit your needs. If you don't listen to your friend who is much more knowledgable than you, then you shouldn't be suprised of the outcome.

I suggest burning the PC to please the gods and maybe, just maybe they will let you have an AGP system next time around (although they shouldn't really since we are having so much fun here!!!)

Ouch, I tried to play with an HP that was running NHL 2003 at Radio Shack the other day. I couldn't believe how ugly the graphics were. (it was at the lowest resolution, the crowd and stands weren't even 2D bitmaps, they were just a flat surface with a few colors here and there, almost no details on the players, and to top it off it seemed as if it was running below 30 frames/second) Anyways, it hurt my eyes, so I immediately looked what were the specs of this system, and guess what? Intel Extreme Graphics!!!

It was like night and day when I returned home and fired up the same game on my system with all details at max, much higher resolution, etc. Even my laptop runs it much better...

So please, take this thing back and let your friend help you out. If you weren't a gamer, I wouldn't really care because you probably wouldn't notice. But a gamer getting a computer with crappy integrated video and no AGP is like a race car driver getting a fast car, but with crappy old winter tires and no stearing wheel.

Now don't go bashing all Walmart employees. Some of us actually ARE good computer people (at least 4 at the Walmart I'm at), but we just can't get any jobs because no one will hire us into computer-related jobs. No "real world" experience, despite working with them for years at home or in college. Such is the job world.

Even my first home-built PC had an AGP slot; Supermicro P6SLA motherboard. All my videocards have been AGP since then. First it had a Trident 9750 (oops), then I got it an Intel i740 8MB card, which was actually pretty good. Next was a 16MB TNT card. Very nice, at the time.

A PCI videocard as powerful as the Radeon 9000 should be fun - his PCI bus will be choking like a, uh....well, place your own inappropriate analogy here (mentally, not in a post).

omg...how can people be so dumb? I'm constantly amazed at how ignorant people can be when they think they're right. *sigh If your friend is so set on getting the HP, then probably nothing will shake him. You'll just end up rubbing it in his face when he tries to run Battlefield 1942. His Intel Extreme Graphics will wind up owning him in the eye.

Something like the HP is perfectly fine for surfing 'net, email, Word... For gaming it just isnt remotely going to cut the mustard. Return the HP and buy at least a Dell - Alienware opened up in UK recently, now that is a gaming machine, but pricey. At least the Dell you can upgrade easily. This isnt just someone saying you have to get faster when actually what you have is ok; that HP just will not do the job. Try playing BF1942 or doanload the UT2003 demo. A large portion (lets say 1/3) of the games for the next few years will be using that UT2003 engine, and another (say) 1/3 will use the Doom3 one which is expected to need even more power than the UT2003 one. Usually games based on other games engines need more power than the original (anyone with JK2 or RTCW will notice rather large FPS drop compared to the original/engine, Quake3). So, UT2003 not running really nice? You'll have to replace half your computer to get it any faster, if you return it and get even a Dell then it'll probably run faster right now, but you can also upgrade bits far easier. And I dont like Dell much.

Kind of like the Packard Bell's of my day!!!

The fact is this machine is not easily upgradeable when it does not offer an agp slot. Integrated systems like HP sell are a nightmare to upgrade and like mentioned on a new machine downright pointless...

I have seen a few hp systems that are nice but they are the ones that need to be customized and not the prebuilt ones sitting on the shelf.

Did he ask the salesman or inform the salesman of his intended use???? If so take it back and say he was mislead by the salesman and/or threaten to call HP customer service and complain about misleading sales practices...

In this day and age and a site like anandtech there is no reason one could not build a system to meet his needs and stay competitve with the prebuilt oem machines...

my kid brother's next door neighbor made the same mistake. Over christmas he asked me whats a good PCI video card. I was extremely surprised that there's companies that still make computers with no AGP slot! The funny thing is, his machine is like 2 ghz. I find that extremely ridiculous. Why put such a fast processor in a machine then cripple it with horrible onboard video?

Doesnt make a difference if you plan on playing games. Its a relatively easy way to cut costs if you need to have 1000 machines that do nothing but office work.

Reminds me of my first P.C. Had a friend who said if you make the decision to buy one, take me. So I did, No AGP slots could not upgrade my Vid-Crad.
O well live and learn, but if he is into games, and the graphics in those games Tell him he NEEDS a AGP slot.
And , how much did he pay for that HP. Still make P.C.s with-out AGP slots?, maybe it's a refurb from awhile ago.

you need more people like these!
in particular: http://www.dansdata.com/sbs3.htm

TBH to look on the upside, he can probably do a decent upgrade by buying a new mobo + graphics card; although obviously it's better to not pay for the HP mobo & warranty in the first place.

edited: isnt there an auto parse urls option somewhere? I like my linkies clickable
