My gamer friend is one of the many who look at that pretty, inexpensive HP computer and buy it. He wants to play lots and lots of games on this computer. We are talking Battlefield 1942 wise here. Only to find out he doesnt have a AGP slot. He thinks the Intel Extreme Graphics will work... If that doesn't he will get a PCI R9000. To save him, I need to get 100 posts telling him why he should return this computer! Remeamber he is a noobie.

Why should we convince him?

I say let him find out on his own.

This would be funny watching him trying to play 1942 on that hardware. LOL

Man, anybody who bought an HP earlier needed help, anybody who buys one now when you can get a Dell for less than $600 (it may also have Intel graphics, but at least it has an AGP slot and is a better system overall than HP) is just nuts.

You should just not let him do it. Tie him to a sofa or something, man, but you just can't let him. He'll thank you later.

pphhhttt!

I've been down this road before:

"Don't get that POS computer! Let me help you buy a better one at a better price."
"No way! The salesman says this PC is top-of-the-line."
"Alright, I warned ya."

When they (my friends) come to me later and complain, I laugh at them. Make 'em buy me a pizza, and then I help them out. LOL

Even if the return period is up, he would be better off selling it at a loss on eBait than trying to play any recent or future games by adding a 9000 PCI -- a little bit of googling and reading would show him that performance is much worse than the AGP version becuase of the 32 bit / 33 MHz PCI bus crippling bandwidth between the CPU and video card.

Im not gonna bash HP here since their machines are good for many things (not gaming though). You should try to teach your friend to look at benchmarks and features of things and do some research before spending all kinds of money on a PC or a component. It will end up saving money in the long run.

Lol. What is the possible end result of all our comments? To prove that you're correct? You know it, we know it, and soon, your friend will know it. Is HP still putting all their system drivers in a little onboard chip that you can't access?

Believe it or not I've actually heard you *can* play 1942 on intel extreme graphics. You just get like 8 fps and a 4 foot draw distance.

If that HP can get on Anandtech, you should make sure that that becomes it's task. That HP should just *barely* be able to display the forums on it and from there he can realize the error of his ways and gain otherworldly knowledge of PCs for the future. That's the problem with the world today, too many people willing to say, "I told you so..." rather than show them the way!

I used to go to Wal-Mart and pick on the computer 'experts' in electronics for fun until it got to be just too sad. Last time I was in the kid was telling me about his PII-400 with his Voodoo3 3000 PCI....in it's day a nice machine. Made the mistake of asking him why he went with PCI.

him: "Cuz it's faster"

"ok. How so?"

him: "That AGP slows things down"

"but of course"

him: "Anyway it's only for geforce cards"

"nVidia has some pretty quick cards now"

him: "Yeah, but it'll take them years to catch up to the 3FX, er, D, yeah, Voodoo"

"yup, that could be"

him: "Anyway when I need a geforce I'll just put one in"

"so you do have an AGP slot?"

him: "No, but I can send it in to HP and they'll install one, it's only 50 bucks"

"you're going to have an AGP slot installed?"

him: "Yeah, no point getting it now since it's slower.

"ok. So, be seeing ya"

Sounds like he just sold your friend a HP.

ouch, can you not just show him this thread?
hp makes the most worthless machines for gaming on the planet.

oops, i mean. they are NOT DESIGNED FOR GAMING... PERIOD.
if you buy a computer for the purpose (50% or more) for gaming, then you buy something like Alienware. or build on your own.

the Intel Extreme Graphics will blow chunks. badly.

While I do not own an HP I have worked on several of them and in my experience have found them to be quite decent computers easily upgradable with very nice parts, nicer than Dell in may cases.

Maybe you guys are talking about some of their older stuff?

Who buys a brand new computer and instantly "upgrades" it anyhow? Kind of defeats the purpose of buying a brand new prebuilt system no?
