I just read "Looking at the United States Through Distorted Lenses: Entertainment Television Versus Public Diplomacy Themes." in American Behavioral Scientist (p735 if you have acess) very interesting article:

The image of the United States in the Middle East has plummeted dramatically since 9/11. To stem growing anti-Americanism and improve America's image, the U.S. State Department has substantially increased public diplomacy staffs and program funding in selected Middle East countries.

Although officials stationed in the Middle East give their public diplomacy operations favorable ratings, the image of the United States remains bad and continues to decline despite occasional upward spikes. In this article the author argues that television entertainment programs, particularly American situation comedies broadcast throughout the Middle East, can be another reason for the continued low regard for Americans and for the United States.

An analysis of three American television programs (The West Wing, That 70's Show, and Friends) shows that the images presented by the programs are distorted and portray an unrealistic picture of life in America. The fact that the attitudes of Middle Easterners are more in tune with television drama images than with their more realistic public diplomacy counterparts leads to the conclusion that the shows trump the State Department's public diplomacy efforts.

So they're formed by TV, as Americans are here, too. I wonder what Jack Bauer has done for the permissive attitude of torture, for example

Don't forget that while we may destroy our image overseas, those programs are what Americans want to watch. They compete for viewers who will buy the shit advertisers push with the commercials. Those shows are the product of the sacred market and fuel the great American economy, which, sadly, also isn't doing too well at the moment.

Common ideas that television should provide elevating moral example that promotes citizenship, humanity, and a smooth functioning cohesive body of people is just out of the question when the dollar is at stake. The emotionally dead who suck you for a dollar will do whatever it takes to titillate you and insure you're the kind of worthless shit that enjoys it.

Or Star Trek. Maybe they'll get scared when they think the US has starships and phasers.

It's sad how much influence TV has.

What are you talking about? "that 70's show" is pretty much spot on for it's depiction of American life!

Maybe we should give Larry the cable guy a TV show and let them watch that.

They wouldn't feel so threatened after watching his stupid ass.

Oh jesus. What if the Arabs get their hands on MTV? Watching 'My super sweet 16', 'NEXT', or 'Parental Control' makes ME want to destroy America.

Friends is actually one of the most popular shows in the ME.

The Simpsons, however, didn't fare as well.

http://www.cbc.ca/arts/tv/dubai.html

The simpsons is really popular in Australia though. I guess the ME just doesn't get the Simpson's snide humor.
It probably doesn't translate well since much of the Simpsons' humor is tied to American/Western culture and proclivities. They apparently have to censor so much to make it palatable for conservative ME sensibilities that it strips the show of its humor as well.

i knew a yoga instructor that was a lot like Phoebe.

but - Phoebe's a waitress, right ? and she lives in NYC ? that does seem un-realistic.

"Friends" = terrorism

who said that ?

I don't know, since the transmission of popular culture abroad has a lag time in it, maybe the Middle East just started getting it in recently, and lets all be honest here, the Simpsons has sucked for at least the last 5-6 years.

When I lived in Berlin (was back when it was West Berlin and had the infamous 'wall') I noted that no one seemed curious about the USA; I was very curious about Germany.

Eventually I asked - the answer? Everybody thought that they already knew all about the USA, so no reason to ask me (the only American around). So how did they learn all about the USA? Why, they watched (old) TV shows like Miami Vice & Baywatch that were dubbed into German.

Happened in London too. Many people I met who upon finding out I had in lived in Miami were sure I was a drug dealer. It seems in the TV show "Miami Vice" you're either an undercover cop or drug dealer.

And some here wonder why I really don't care about foreigners' opinion of us.

That's strange. The people in the places I have visited irritated the hell out of me because they wouldn't stop with the questions about the US. I guess we met different people.

Youve got to realize they may have Friends re-runs, but they are censored to hell. We used to buy bootleg DVD's off the Iraqi's for $3 a movie. A lot of the movies that would be G or PG-13 and not get censored at all in the US had the dumbest stuff bleeped/blurred out.

Saw "Click" and whats her name had everything but her face and hands blurred out (legs if she was wearing shorts, arms if in short sleeve, etc) That kind of threw me off, I was like... really? With as much porn, booze, and whore houses they have over there they do seem to pick some stupid stuff to get all moral on.

...if you think "Friends" is damaging the U.S. image in the world, you should see what "Married With Children" did....
