Another deal in today's Dallas Fry's ad:

Dlink 108 Mbps Wireless G router
69.99 - 20 MIR = 49.99

Dlink 108 Mbps Wireless G PCI Adapter
49.99 - 10 MIR =39.99

Dlink 108 Mbps Wirelss Cardbus Adapter
49.99 - 10 MIR = 39.99

How noticeable is the difference between 108 Mbps over 54 Mbps??

Also have a Netgear kit includes 54 Mbps wireless G router and notebook card for 119.99 - 20 MIR = 99.99 (the DLINK items above together are $90 MIR, so that would be a better option)...

You've tried copying files with 108mbps wireless....or are you using 802.11b or something?

do you have to have a special d-link card to get 108?

Edit:
A new free firmware upgrades D-Link 802.11g Xtreme G products to deliver the Industry?s fastest performance, up to 15 times faster than 802.11b. At 108Mbps data bandwidth the 802.11g D-Link Xtreme G DI-624 with enhanced 108 delivers excellent and consistent data rate throughput.

You need to buy D-Link's 802.11g Xtreme G wireless card. All existing 54Mb/s cards can perform at 108Mb/s speeds with the newest driver updates.

As for performance, yes you get more bandwidth, just remember that with distance the bandwidth decreases. In other words, if your router is upstairs, and you are on a wireless PC or Laptop downstairs, you won't get 108 Mb/s. Within close proximity (i.e. a few feet) I have been able to get up to 80 Mb/s and from one floor down the most I usually get is about 30 to 60 depending on where I am at. Large files have never been much of a problem with this setup.

please define "big"

even on a 100mbs switched lan, moving 80GB of 2-5GB files takes some time... hell, even going from one hdd to another...

Dell has a $40 rebate on a combo DI-624 selling at $89.00 and DWL-G650 selling at $57.95 until 1-5-04. Just picked it up. $106.95 after rebate, no tax or shipping.

Dunno, I tried moving a 100MB file and it took 5-6 minutes.
This is with wireless G.

Does anyone know if the Dlink 108 Mbps Wireless G router can be used as a simple wireless access point? I already have a LinkSys cable router and I'd prefer to put the Dlink at the end of a wire from the LinkSys, in another room using it as a switched hub and wireless access point. The other room is closer to where the receiver would be most of the time and my office is already cluttered enough.

Can the cable router functionality be disabled or ignored?

I'm pretty sure this "G+" 108Mbps stuff is all proprietary - i.e. DLink have "turbo'd" 802.11g with some sort of compression, which will most likely add a fair bit of overhead when combined with WEP128 - this is not going to be faster than 100Mbps ethernet folks.

Anyway, my point being, I think you can only use hardware from the same vendor in a network - i.e. no DLink AP and Linksys PCMCIA card, and certainly not any 802.11b/a stuff.

That said, Linksys (or Netgear?) had 108Mbps and now DLink do too, so they either share the same hardware or there's yet another "standard".....

Yeah, you'd have to use the same AP and adapter to get the 108mbps, but remember, distance and any obstacles will be serious hits on performance. I think I'll stay with my 802.11b setup for the time being.

The problem is that some of use the built-in wireless solution in our notebooks. I have wireless a/b/g on my IBM Thinkpad but it will only do 54Mbps even if I buy a 108Mbps router. The other problem with wireless is that it runs only half-duplex. I don't know if something is wrong with my configuration, but when I am using 802.11b the max bandwidth I get while moving a large file across the network is around 5Mbps. You can click on task manager and look at the "network" tab to see this. I tried to find out why, and I found some information leading me to believe that's the best I can expect based on the half-duplex nature of wireless.

That being said, I still think this router is a great deal. I wish I had a Fry's around me.

I don't think that makes sense, they still call it 'g', and all the other companies have 108mbps also. I think it has something to do with full-duplex vs standard half-duplex (assuming wireless usually runs in half). The reason you would have to have the same brands is because theres no standard for full-duplex wireless...

just my 2cents

It has nothing to do with duplex. Duplex allows for simultaneous incoming and outcoming connections at full speed. This has nothing to do with the 108Mbps. The speed boost is due to the use of 2 channels instead of one. I am not sure about its effects on duplexing, as I remember hearing that wireless can only address one task at a time.

Remember that wireless networks can EASILY interfere with each other, especially if they are close. In the case of SuperG or XtremeG, both competing 108Mbps mutilchannel technologies, the amount of interference is horrendous. Intereference affects the most extreme of 802.11b and 802.11g 's channels, 1 and 11, reducing overall transfer rates for nearby AP's to a [dreary] 1.5Mbps [for a 54Mbps product]. Tell your neighbors to kiss their highspeed goodbye.

Even so, D-links product CURRENTLY offers a user-selectable Dynamic multi-channel mode, in which the second channel is aggregated Only when necessary. Netgear offers static
mode only as of yet, abut a patch is soon to be released.

^^^ Do you think it makes any difference which channel I set my network on? I try to keep it away from both 1 and 11, and also away from 6 which everybody on this planet uses. I try to use 4 or 8 or something like that, does this help me in any way? Thanks.

There are only 3 real channels, 1,6, and 11; there's no real point in the others unless you're on the edge of interference from somebody on one of those minor channels.

Are you saying that if I'm on channel 8, that I am still partially on 6? Thanks.

Buy.com bundles the router and PC-card for $88.99 AR. Link. A couple times they have dropped the price to something in the $60 range after rebate, but that only lasted for a few hours each day (and I missed it both times :| ). The bundle is on order and will take a couple weeks to get to you if you order from Buy.com right now, but that is the cheapest price I have found.

Make sure that if you purchase the Router+PCMCIA combo your laptop has a 32bit card slot. My old Thinkpad, that I was hoping to use as a web browser/email station in the living room, has a crappy old 16bit card slot. I had to return the shipment to Buy.com for a refund because I couldn't get it to work with my set up. The router is REALLY easy to set up, and there is a Super-G access point so if anyone's looking for a solution to hook up an xbox to their home network with a high-speed connection, this looks like it'd more than fit the bill with plenty of bandwidth to spare.
