ftp server from inside LAN

i am running a home network with standart internal ips like 192.168.0.2 and stuff like that
how do i go about running an ftp server on a computer inside the lan that can be accessed internally ?

same as any ftp, install server software on the machine u want to run the ftp and on the clients install client software to access the ftp, then point them to the server, quite simple.

Not quite that simple. You need something running on your external host/gateway and tell it to FORWARD incoming connections to ports 20/21 (usually) to 192.168.0.1, ports 20/21. If your ISP doesn't allow incoming trafic to port 21 (standard ftp), pick a port like 5000/5001.

[EDIT: misread... these are for letting the server be accessed EXTERNALLY. My bad.]

thats what i want, i need to be able to access a 192.168.0.1 computer externally so i could log into it from school or something

It might help if i said that i'm using a router.
if i had an actual server running, i could use all kinds of software to route stuff diffrent places. Since i'm on a router, IT is assigned the external 24.whatever ip, therefore, when someone tries to login to 24.whatever, the router doesn't know how to serv an ftp so i'm looking for a way to run software on a client machine that can be accessed from outside the network.

i flashed my router and it broke so as soon as i get it back i'll try that (forwarding port 20 and 21 to 192.168.0.2)
i'm using a DLink router, is there away to assign the first 5 addresses static, then have everything over 192.168.0.6 be dynamic?

i dunno about you, but with my router i can have virtual servers, i just tell it im running whatever server on whatever port, point it to the machine thats running the server(in my case 192.168.0.2) and there you go. Does your router allow virtual servers? Cant you like log into your router and set this up?

no i don't have one of those big fancy linksys routers. i just have a little DLink that doesn't have too many options. but i do think i saw something about port forwarding or virtual server or something. i'm gona go ahead and mess with it as soon as i get my router back (its currently being replaced)

If you can't even get to the point where you login, try running the server
and the portforwarding on a higher numbered port, such as 5000. Your ISP may
not allow incoming connections on port 21 (like telocity)

I dont have a big fancy linksys either, i have a cheap little smartlink. But its just as goos and has just as many if not more options.
