Fuji F50 vs Canon SD1000

The F50 should be a better camera. Built-in IS and better noise sensitivity than Canon (although not as good as the Fuji F31), plus excellent resolution (12MP).

Since price isn't an issue you should consider the higher end Canon sd850 or sd870. The sd1000 is a great little camera, but kind of lower end.

Or how about a PowerShot A720 IS?

The controls on Canon P&S cameras tend to be much better than others.

12MP vs. 7MP or 8MP in a P&S isn't even worth considering as a purchase factor. The companies just pump up the MP to have a bigger number for people in the stores to go "LOOK! Bigger number means better!"

You can print a 16x20 easily enough with a 6MP sensor.

The A720 has a 6X Optical Zoom vs. the 3X of the other mentioned cameras.

Don't bother with digital zoom on a P&S. If you want that, you can just crop and enlarge in photoshop and get better results.

depends on who you ask 🙂 I consider all the A series to be "gf/wife compact"... it goes in their purse 😛 You can't slide those in your pocket and sit down still comfortably (well, relatively).

It fits nicely in a shirt or jacket pocket. I don't think I would put any camera in a pants pocket. 😛

IMO 12 mp is too much for a compact, even for the larger fuji lens. Man I dunno why Fuji ever moved away from the specs of the f31. That is such an amazing camera!

Yah, personally I am looking for a second camera that will fit in my shirt pocket for motorcycle touring. My A620 is just too big. I assume the A720 is about the same size as my 620? So, I am deciding between the sd850 and sd870. I think they really ought to be the same price, but oh well.

For a slightly larger camera, I would lean towards an A650 over the 720. If you haven't noticed I admit I am quite partial to Canon 🙂 and also to OIS.

I have to agree with corkyg the S5 looks super nice too.

I have to keep it to two camera's and one has to be pocket version, and one needs to be wife friendly. I have to admit there have been a few time I sure would have liked an ultra-zoom, but not too often.
