I grew up in L.A. and have lived in CA almost my whole life. The Big L does not touch my funny bone. It might send up Hollywood, but I was there and the movie's portrayal doesn't ring true.
I find Coen Bros. movies interesting to great, and my favorite is still Fargo. It's anything but a comedy but has its funny moments, I guess, and by intention. I think it's interesting to note that Fargo was set and filmed in the Coen's back yard, where they grew up. The Big L was certainly not.
I lived in L.A. for 8 years and worked in Hollywood, Pasadena, Torrance and Bellflower. I lived in Marina del Rey, Hermosa Beach and Torrance. The movie isn't trying to portray Los Angeles... just some of the crazy people who live here. And there are crazy people like this who live here. Most aren't but there definitely are some and, much like a lot of Los Angelenos, not all of them are from here.
I loved the Big Lebowski. I can see why it has such a huge cult following.
