Just bought a sofa for 1,200
Bedroom set for 1200
Dining table and 4 chairs for 1200
Entertainment Center 1,200
Luckily I am splitting the costs!

Wow!
Stop by a college at the end of the semester. At the end of the semester last year, there were 4 sofas out for the trash, and this college has less than 4000 students. Plus, that was at only one of our dumpsters.

I think I'll be furnishing my entire apartment next semester for the cost of one of your dining room chairs.

I hope you are splitting costs with your significant other and not just a college buddy.

When I moved into my first apartment of my own (without roomates) i started with a sleeping bag, (upgraded with an air matress later!) and a couple milk crates I used for my computer desk, and two of those rocking floor chairs (sorta like a car bucket seat) that I had left over from my dorm days.

meh, I spent about 1000 total when I moved into my first place a few years back. Haven't bought anything since then furniture wise, but got married and moved into a house, so my wife and I worked hard to "inherit" a lot of free furniture from family members and friends. Now we have more furniture than we need

Cliffs:
-Just depends what you're willing to live with
-Some people like new stuff
-Some people are ok with used stuff
-Enjoy your new stuff!

I did the air matress thing for a while after an ex moved out and took the bed with her. Doesn't last long with cats though, and it sucks to wake up on the floor because you rolled off the side of a half inflated matress.

$1200 entertainment center?
$1200 for a dining room table and 4 chairs?
$1200 on a single sofa?

Overspent much?

Sofa and a Bed I understand buying new. Table and entertainment center you could have found for cheap used.

Or you could just check the free section on craigslist.

No thanks, who knows what they did on that furniture!

At least we know what you won't be.

Furnishing a house is expensive. An apartment is cake.

Seems you went with about average items though.

Most people end up getting free furniture from relatives when they get their first place (unless your first apartment is far from home.) After that, you can upgrade furniture at your leisure as you save money and find sales. If you can afford good stuff from the day you move out of your parents' house, more power to you, I guess. Everyone I know took at least a few years to accumulate decent furniture.

wow, you paid a lot...

i paid 600 bucks for an amazing sofa from HOM!

and picked up great furniture from IKEA for 200$.

you wasted your money!!

and LOL krunchy, me and my GF already split up all of the stuff since we both paid half of everything. I doubt we will break up, but who knows! Me and her move out on April 23rd ... deference is we bought a condo. I opted out of renting, hate to waste my money!

im doing the same thing. not married but bought a coop with the SO
renting sucks. even with my high coop maintenance fee the total mortgage payment (15 year) + maintenance is still cheaper than renting the same amount of space. (Queens NYC)

we split everything, have a joint account that we both dump money into for the home, and both names are on everything so if the unspeakable happens, we are both protected.
although with my income I am putting more money into the joint account now. but whatever.

You drop 1200 on an entertainment center and a sofa and we are supposed to be sympathetic to your plight?
