you wasted your money!!

and LOL krunchy, me and my GF already split up all of the stuff since we both paid half of everything. I doubt we will break up, but who knows! Me and her move out on April 23rd ... deference is we bought a condo. I opted out of renting, hate to waste my money!

im doing the same thing. not married but bought a coop with the SO
renting sucks. even with my high coop maintenance fee the total mortgage payment (15 year) + maintenance is still cheaper than renting the same amount of space. (Queens NYC)

we split everything, have a joint account that we both dump money into for the home, and both names are on everything so if the unspeakable happens, we are both protected.
although with my income I am putting more money into the joint account now. but whatever.

exactly what we did, but she just pays me and i pay the 'bills'. Smart idea on that joint account, maybe me and her should do that too.

yeah, mortgage, association, electrical, (associaton covers gas, heating, water, etc), it only comes to about 800$ a month. Now insurance and cell phone , makes that a grand total of 1000$ a month for BOTH of us to live together and OWN our condo, and only 500$ from each of us a month, is really cheap considering we are going to school too.

You're not a very frugal shopper if you couldn't have found all of that for much cheaper.

Everyone I know took at least a few years to accumulate decent furniture.

I have been out of college for two years and working full time living at home saving up money so I already put in my time

I think you gave up your right to complain when you spent so much. You can EASILY get nice furniture for MUCH less than you paid.

That is the going rate for nice and new furniture. I challenge you to find me something nice and new for less.

If you want used items or items that will break in short order then go ahead and find the bargains.

Not for me.

Dining room table and four chairs: $500, solid wood, suede seats
Entertainment center: $400 on clearance
coffee table: $120 scratch and dent (the kind of dings that would be done in the course of two months living with it)
love seat: free (someone redecorated)
2 lazy boys: free (same person)
Bedroom furnature: kept the stuff I got growing up
Toaster oven: $80 at lowes
Microwave: $130 at lowes
Four lamps: $100 total at Home Depot
Cube things for the lamps to sit on: $60 total at Target

I could've spent alot more and not been as happy. Even though the cube things aren't well made, nobody notices them because they're tucked under the lamp and beside the chair and the wall. All the other stuff is excellent.

Well that's my point exactly. It would be like me complaining about having to spend $40k on a Lexus. A $15k Civic will get me by just as well.

Depends on the furniture. R2G is usually MDF + Veneer trash, same with Carls.

More or less, in my hunt for good furniture, I found that Sofa's are largely the same and the only place to get anything with solid wood at a decent price is to find your local Amish craftsman. You'd be amazed at how cheap that stuff is with awesome quality. Almost everything else you buy in a store less than Ethan Allen is trash.

If you want something cheaper, go Ikea. Personally, we got the Markor entertainment center with two massive bookshelves and a TV stand for $550, I have pics I can post later. Sure, its soft wood and I had to assemble it, but it looks nice and will last at least 5 years.

I don't know how much money you have (or what you consider quality furniture) so it's none of my business telling you, "You overspent fool! Garage sales FTW!"

As long as that $1200 couch looks and feels like a $1200 couch, you did good. Ditto with the other things.

(I type this on a no-name el cheapo office chair with a missing caster and foam sticking out of the arm rests - I have cats)

$1200 for a single couch? I've seen some pretty decent leather couches for ~650 Why did you need a $1200 entertainment center? I bought a TV stand with shelves for my 42inch LCD, receiver, and DVD player for $75. As for the table and chairs for 4 that is insane. It would be one thing if money were no object to you, but it sounds like this was definitely a burden on you. For an apartment, that was a huge waste IMO (unless you plan on living in the apartment for 5+ years) as it is fairly likely that at least some of that furniture will not go with you when you purchase a home.

On a related note, I finally took the plunge on a pillowtop mattress pad, Egyptian cotton sheets, a new comforter and a few new pillows and couldn't be happier.

Here is the thing...

If you are just living by yourself or you and your SO just need some place to sit to watch TV occasionally and sleep at night, you dont have to spend a lot.

On the other hand, if you are like me and my SO, you spend a good deal of time in your apt/home. That being the case, we have a really nice TV with a really nice couch and i have a herman miller task chair for my desk. Given, these things were really expensive, but it is what we like to spend our money on. It also helps that i get a massive discount for her being an interior designer

LOL.. we haven't spent that kind of money to furnish our HOUSE yet. We've lived in there for 4 years (in July). Our sofa and loveseat together was $1000, and those are the most expensive pieces that we own. All of our coffee tables came from my parents for free. We have a cheap ass metal frame futon in the living room, but that is OK since we don't spend any time there. Our couch and loveseat are in the family room. We bought an unfinished oak TV stand and finished it ourselves to save $$. Our bed has a metal frame with a wood head board. No need for some stupid four post bed. I have my old dresser from when I was a kid, and my wife's was falling apart so we bought a nice (but heavy) Sauder unit that I had to put together. Sure, it isn't real wood but it looks nice.

Dining room table was free from a coworker. Kitchen table and chairs came from walmart. No reason to spend a lot of money on either of those. We had an old MDF entertainment center that we bought from Walmart for $100, but it is in the basement now holding books. Our TV sits on a TV stand.

Hehe, cheap usually equates to poor construction and quality. ANYTHING made of MDF is NOT quality wooden furniture, I don't care how much you paid, or who made it. Obviously, if your just out of school or in your first place, I can certainly understand buying cheap, but if your looking at furnishing your current place with stuff you want to last for 8 years or more, then your better off buying some quality furniture. That said, $1200 for a nice sized, wood dining room table and four chairs, isn't bad at all. I bought a simple bar table with three chairs for about $800, which I thought was a great deal, especially since I bought the table locally and it has a lifetime replacement guarantee. Also, the style of furniture that you prefer can have a profound impact on the cost of your furniture. I prefer modern, which tends to cost more just because it's become so popular in past years. My advice is go one room at a time and buy quality pieces as you can. And you can buy a couple of nice pieces and supplement with less expensive accessories with the same results. I've furnished my living room, kitchen, dining room and home office and it's cost me about $6000, including the entertainment system. My bedroom will likely be the most expensive room in the house, but the advantage of doing one room at a time over time is that it gives you plenty of time to look for good deals on quality pieces. Also, if your in a metropolitan area, you can always find young artists who will make some nice pieces of furniture at decent prices.

I like to inherit furniture from family members, I don't plan on buying anything until a wife forces me too. My neighbor gave me an entertainment center, that thing is rock solid wood (and a pain in the arse to move). I have a feeling that unless it falls off the back of a truck or something, it will still be holding a TV and other junk 50 years from now.

Oh yeah, and who cares what someone else "has done to it"? I sleep in the same king-size bed my parents did, just put some new sheets on it and its all good with me Also inherited a couch from my uncle that I'm sure he had some "fun times" on..the girlfriends haven't seemed to mind =)

I think 1200 dollars is how much my roommates and I spent in college for our furniture, and that's only because most of us bought new desks (about 80-120 per person).

I hope you have some nice stuff now  and heck, have a  since you'll probably be cutting back on expenses.

I have an old futon that's served me well....free
Coffee tables & End Tables from a yardsale in 2000....$18

As for new furniture, I just bought a leather sofa and chair for $1800
I also bought a new bed and 2 night stands from Ethan Allen. Awesome stuff for $2000.
I plan on getting more as I get more money, but EA sells quality stuff that will last me at least 15-20 years.

I wouldn't spend that much money furnishing an apartment. Save the $$$ for a downpayment on a house.
Then again, I am a cheap bastard
I bought a pretty nice black leather couch for $100 on craigslist. It was a bit scraped on the side, (not seating surface). I cleaned and conditioned it with Lexol, and used black shoe polish to cover the scrapes. It looks pretty new now. Much better than the fabric couch I bought new and cost me $500 looks after 5 years.
