Future standard

I´ve been talking with a friend of mine, and I was
planning to make an upgrade of my computer e.g.
the Antec Plus1080AMG 430W True Power casing
which also is a moderately expensive investment,
he argues that with the new techs like the USB standards
and the new slots/connection designs, standard of
mobos, mobo attachement in casing and so on will make e.g. casing
like the one I mentioned "obsolete", and one must buy a new casing
because of the future standards doesnt fit the layout of the casing.
He thinks maybe a year or year and a half that we are there....
This does make me a little insecure if I want to invest in
expensive equipment like the great antec case if I cant make
a hardware upgrade with that case after a year or two.

What do u think about this??

Why
are
your
lines
so
short?

Technology ALWAYS changes. If you don't replace the case in 2 yrs when you upgrade you'll likely have to replace the PS. Just get the case that fits your needs and don't worry about it. If you're really worried then put together a system and sell it when it's a year old and upgrade, after a year it'll still be of use to someone and will allow you to recover some of your cost.

LOL...the only move PSU's maybe going in the near future would be EPS power supply's and plugs which are and can be ATX compatible so heed thorins advice and lengthen them lines plus don't worry about later on as you might miss the enjoyment today

Why are my lines so short...hmm...good question?!

Yes, I´m aware that technology always changes, I was a bit put off when I thought of new generation motherboards wont fit the casing standard layout e.g. screw placement and so on hence u need a new casing BUT I guess you are right I´m getting to "philosophic" about it.

Yeah, I guess you are right about the ATX compatibility, but the one thing that cant be compatible is the mobo, today ATX tomorrow ?, but on the other hand I must agree with your last sentence which one can translate to Carpe Diem

I was thinking more along the lines of an update to the ATX connector (since everyone has been adding an additional 12V) and also the change to SATA power connectors.

I can see your scepticism (or whatever you wanna call it) but I don't really see mobo form factors changing too much (the only change/new one in the last 3 years in mini-itx and it hardly applies to a case like this), but it is possible. And while backplates may change, mobo manufacuters normally include new ones in the box anyway.

Can you expand your thought here, I didn´t quite get what u meant by it, in regard to new mobo standard and old standard case (like the one I mentioned Antec).

Just that the little backplates that cover the spaces between all your connectors (ports...whatever you wanna call them) always come with the mobo (as well as the case) so any changes to the port config (and hence backplate) don't matter (IMHO).
Power supplies will soon start coming with serial ATA 3.3v power connectors standard.
As seen in the IDF coverage they're starting to show up now.
