More on topic, it looks to me like both ATI and nVs new offerings will have games where each clearly exceeds the other and that it may come down to what games you prefer.

I foresee many a "Look at Game X!" vs "Look at Game Y" type posts when reality probably either of these cards would provide a better gaming experience than most of us have ever seen.

Not sure I understand this, the chip will start sampling "as soon" as next week, and they expect it to be available in retail by February, possibly even January? How is that even possible?

We missed it, because it didn't say that in the article?

If there are "NV Trolls" here, I'd say there are just as likely "ATI Munkys".

Rollo is fair and balanced. I guarantee he will be the first to call out an nvidia paper launch.

Wow, statement of the year.

I hope the G71 will be a monster.

thats how they prove they were right

I guess you can't lose with a statement like that.

I'm gonna try one: Nvidia's card will be different than their previous one. Ati's card will also be different than their previous one.

Hmm but what about a 7800GT refresh at 90nm and with the RAM around 1200....if mine can hit 500ish.....90nm means 600? 650? It probably will be faster

I hope they are both monsters and we (the consumers) win either way.

Very true. What I really hope though is for XGI to get into gear.

no, not at all . . . they have been this way since the DustBuster debacle.

and especially so since the 6800 series

. . . and i am really looking forward to both of these launches . . . here we see the differing philosphy of each company diverge even more yet produce incredibly competitive and exceptional products.

in a way i expect the r580/g71 "refreshes" to preview the r600/g80 architectures. . . .i will probably upgrade - no, completely makeover - my rig then or shortly thereafter . . . until then i am stuck - no . . . sticking with AGP.

Didn't the R580 tape out something like two months ago? I would guess that we won't see G71 until March at the earliest. Just because something tapes out it doesn't mean that they will get acceptable yields. The part may not even work properly, similar to R520.

I really do hope for a more fair fight this time 'round before DX10 hits. It was quite dissapointing to see how the X1800 series got bashed by it's timing. If it could only have come out in august as planned the graphics war wouldn't have been so one sided. I am hoping to build a top-end machine around christmas '06, but wih so many goodies coming out along the way like G71, RD580, R580, GDDR4 1GHz+ memory this summer... it might be hard to hold myself back .

nVidia does a great job of keeping info about when they're planning to launch cards quiet.

IIRC, there wasn't too much hype about the 7800GTX till, bam!
Suddenly it was out, & kicking ass

This is gonna be an interesting winter

I just hope for lower prices.

The potential for 1000+ Cdn. cards doesn't make me happy really...

Dude you live in Michigan.

I don't see these cards costing $1,000CDN. Even if they list at $699US, that's maybe $900CDN tops.

IMO SLI is what's driving up the cost of the high-end cards. People are willing to pay $699 because it's less money than two X1800XT's.

Actually they say that the X1800XT is selling quite well. The 512MB GTX is discontinued, so it goes to show that the best card does not always win in the end. It's kinda like Betamax vs. VHS, but that's going waaaaay off topic, even tho this is the video forum.

From the looks of it, this is not a "fair fight" though. The G71 looks like a die shrunk G70, whereas ATI has significantly revised their core, and probably has added in a ton of transistors.

When I was in university I loved living in the past. I dressed retro and used a crappy computer. I also drove a car that was built in 1986. :Q

Once you graduate you will game like a "modern man" as Rollo puts it. You magically travel to what you see as the future and your fellow man sees as present day. It's quite the experience.
