well, they ghive you what you paid in full, excluding rebates. so in my case it was a pretty good deal.
i had a 6600gt agp i needed to unload (the build fell through) so i got the full 180ish back from evga as thats what my newegg invoice showed. then i got the rebate in the mail from evga. and because i stepped up at the release of the 7800gtx, the evga msrp wasn't far off from the few deals floating around.
but you're right, unless you can step up upon right at release, you will be over paying, sometimes significantly, for the new cards.
