I would take Crusaders advice and lets all rejoice in the fact that DX10 hardware is upon us. Ya ATI is rumored to be doing lay offs ......and...? The R600 is still coming which is good also for us because I sure don't want to spend $1000 for G80 and I am pretty sure Gstanfor and Crusader don't want that either. Didn't Intel do this too around the time of conroe? And that has been a disaster right? Yep those conroe chips suck like a saw toothed granny suffering from epileptic seizures, right?

So far the hardware is looking great now bring on the sexy games.

Gstanfor has calmed down [maybe back on meds; maybe took the nvidia fans advice to 'chill'] and all is well.

no ATI rumours . . . DAAMitT is doing around 2,000 layoffs . . . lots of pink-slips in redland as totally expected

i am not rejoicing in DX10 HW quite yet . . . i may join you in your euphoric revels after the reviews.

you want sex and G80?

Contrary to what you may believe apoppin, I was never worked up to begin with, thus I haven't calmed down.

You fanatics aren't the only ones who enjoy pulling chains. I' m a great believer of the old saying "fight fire with fire".

sure you have . . . it obvious to us that your fire is 'resting' a bit . . .
. . . meds will do that without your even realizing.

and i learned from the best chain puller that ever was resident here . . . and even managed to get his many many times

I'm still waiting for rejoicing...

Seriously, who's in for a G80 on launch? Anyone? I havent heard many people saying if they were actual buyers or not.
I'm in for 1 8800GTX, at least.

I wouldnt blame people if they waited for benchmarks first, I'm guessing more will be leaking in the next few weeks, but I want something for Crysis/UT07, the new AA mode, DX10/SM4 and something about 128shaders rings true and clear to me. O.. and free AA if thats true.

i am rather disappointed on the stills . . . waiting for 'motion' Nov 8

and i am skipping g80 unless it meets your expectations.

It depends entirely on how much they are and what performance advantage they have over other available cards. I mean, if the 8800GTX becomes available at 650.00, that will be cost prohibitive for me especially since we just bought a new house. HOUSE COMES FIRST, GAMING COMES 7th or 8th. Lots o stuff in between there. If the 8800GTS comes out for around 400, then I might consider it but only if it still has monumental performance/feature advantage over currently available cards (7900/X1900).

I mean, a 8800GTS/GTX would have to absolutely demolish anything out today (including the GX2) for me to bite the bait on that hook. Vista or not.

I generally don't buy the top end card. I usually go for the runner up. Currently have a 7900GT (no longer runner up, but was before 7950GT and GX2 came out.)

what you fail to realize, Keys is that you get a LOT more [great] credit offers when you are a homeowner.

so there's no excure not to have the latest and greatest

--i'm remodeling my home

finished the landscaping . . .

i don't think Vista is a reason to upgrade anymore than the DX10 'features' of g80 . . . it should be judged on its DX9 performance alone.

I did fail to realize that as being a homeowner is new to me. Scary and exciting at the same time. Tax returns will be nicer however, and that will be the way I will get a G80 if at all.

I can rejoice without buy the card can I not? Your rejoicing without buying the card right now. I doubt that I will be buying though as I just droped some cash on an x1950xtx, and while I could sell that card when G80 comes out I don't know if that is what I am going to do. I am kind of looking toward what ATI can do with it's physics aspirations. Two r600 and an x1950xtx for physics sounds pretty cool. I am still waiting on this one untill G80 is out and I can see just how much it smacks down ATI's flagship.

I'm sorry if some of my reservations for this card aren't living up your glee club hipe, perhaps if you pass me some of that green coolaid over this way I can start cheering to your standards.

Hope they'll fit! I can't even imagine the heating issues! :Q

Ya that is something to worry about. Also I don't really want to think about the powersupply I would need for that setup. It's just something I was thinking about; my DX10 rig is really still on the drawing board, if even that. There is a lot of tech yet to come out in the next year or so. I along with several others are kind of in a holding patten over this DX10/Vista stuff. Even if G80 is balls to the wall a great card I imagine many people will still hold out to see what ATI's R600 is going to do. Granted you will have those that buy the best card everytime a new card comes out and for that type of person a G80 is gona rock. I personally wish I would have waited for the 7series refreash, instead I got a 7800gt and was happy but still let down in some regards to how it handled modern games. I am probably going to wait for the refreash of these DX10 cards, by then games should be out that utilize their power, and the cards will have had their bugs worked out. Right now though I am enjoying some of the DX9 games I haven't played yet, and in all honesty they are playing great on the x1950xtx I just got. The cooler isn't too loud and it does a good job of keeping the gpu cool. I'm not disappointed with it. Although time will tell how good of a purchase it was. I'm looking forward to seeing how well it does with Dark Messiah and Quake Wars along with what holiday games have yet to see the light of day. The game that I will go all out on is Project Offset when that game hits I don't care who is at top I will be buying their flagship card and possible two of them.

But Crusader, it isn't going to fall into your previous classification of the "Cool, quiet, single-slot solution with a low power consuption....(blah, blah, blah)...Sorry!!" tangent. What ever will you do?

You are correct about the waiting for benches thing. I'll definatley restrain from deciding a purchase depending on what benchmarks show.

a unified shader card is going to be a much better choice for physics operations, if only because it will be the unified cards that are finally taken seriously for GPGPU applications.

With the X1900 series. Am I correct in that the shaders on the X19x0 series cards are not unified? Because they still have 16 pixel pipelines?

So, this gen (R600 and G80) are actually the first "unified" architecture offered for desktop computers. (Forget XBOX 360) Im talking desktops only.

"Unified shaders" refers to a set of general purpose shaders, as opposed to discrete vertex and pixel shaders. The only unified shader gpu currently available in consumer products is the Xenos gpu in the Xbox360.

i thought the r580 has unified shaders too?

also the g965 chipset has them as well.

Yeah, I forgot about the intel x3000 using unified shaders. But the r580 does not - it has 8 vertex shaders and 48 separate pixel shaders.

R600 has unified shaders, but not the G80.

That is incorrect according to the of the articles posted in the first post of this thread...

GeForce 8800GTX graphics cards are equipped with 128 unified shaders clocked at 1350 MHz.

http://dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4441

you know they get a lot of things wrong. not as bad as theInq but the often make minor errors in previews. [sorry KK]

everything i read - except for that single line - indicated that g80 would not be 'unified' like r600. and it doesn't matter to MS in implementing DX10.
