Is there a reason you are quoting yourself? You asked the question less than 45 min ago and are all-ready back when a 5 second google search would tell you that yes, a 1GB version of the card is expected to be released.

1) Any idea when?
2) Is it really plausible to get 1GB?

I always buy EVGA vanilla and just overclock to superclock specs. It's always worked, and I have faith it will work this time too. This is exactly what I was waiting for. Odd sticker design though.

Just pulled the trigger. I doubt they'll launch much cheaper, maybe $20 bucks or so.

I'm assuming I'll be fine for step-up. I'm done until 9800 series arrives though, and I'm betting step-up will be expired anyway.

Done! Thanks Spike..

I wanted to get ATG's master opinion on it.

basically
the v1 8800GTS 640MB (6/8 SP G80) gets beaten by the 8800GT (7/8 SP G92)
the v2 8800GTS 640MB (7/8 SP G80) is much closer to the GT, but I think it also falls short in most cases.
the v3 8800GTS (8/8 SP G92) card would beat everythng on the chart, it is the same amount of SP as a GTX, but with lower ram speed, higher SP clock, and different ram sizes (the 512MB is less, the 1GB v is more).

So the new GTS wins... in fact in some benches it outperforms the GTX.

And it will hopefully OC well. I'm skeptical of a 720 ceiling..

Well, that makes two of us... Were you apprehensive about ordering from these guys? I was a little bit because I never heard of them... But free shipping and no tax made this the deal for me, assuming of course, they actually have stock and ship it out in a timely fashion.

They're good. I've used them before. I'm in Atlanta, they're only two days ground from me. I'm assuming in stock means in stock. Order should ship tomorrow. I'll be calling to make sure.

I would love to step up to the 9800 but if my luck holds my 90 days will expire exactly 1 day before it launches. This happened to me with my current 7800GT, the 7900GT launched 1 day past my step-up, AAARGH!!!

Anyway, I am hoping to at least see some small gains when I get this 8800GTS vs my current 7800GT....

Let me know what you find out! The sooner the better... I might not get any work done tomorrow... Be checking the forums too often...

So you ordered one too? Cool... But you are not sure if it qualifies for step-up, right? Not that it matters to me. The setup-up program is something I don't think I would use. Probaly give this card to my dad, take his 8800GTS-640MB and sell it for $175 ish to offset the new $600 9800GTX... Hell, nVidia might release that thing at $699, they like to keep pushing the envelope...

Will do. I'm thinking it will go smoothly. They ship pretty fast. I'm betting the Egg and others have initial shipments but are sitting on them till launch.

On step-up Spike, name drop! EVGA lists top staffers on their website. Call and ask for one by name. A few days out of step-up, no problem...

How can you tell which is the G92 version and which is the older G80 based card?

Is there something specific to look for?

Thinking of grabbing one of these and selling off my HD2900, but I think my next card will be a high end DX10.1 offering of some kind.

Still curious how to tell the difference between the 2 card variants.

Memory size is the indicator. 512MB on a GTS, it can only be the G92.

Why would you spend that much money on a single card when two gt's sli'd will pound it down for just a little bit more.

When? And at what price?

1) no need for SLI motherboard (Intel boards overclock better)
2) no need for a huge PSU
3) Too much heat
4) compatibility issues with SLI drivers and games

Amen on all counts. One of my favorites:

5) Wasted memory on slave card

SLI/CF are so temping you can taste them. But the cons, well, you have to see that second card going to waste in a poorly or unsupported app to truly understand why some will never do it [again].

I remember pondering to go with either one x1900xt or two 7900GTs to run Oblivion. Then I saw the AT benchies that gave ATi superior IQ ratings, as well as one x1900xt holding above an SLI'd 7900GT rig.

I think two 7900GTXs beat two x1900xtxs, but I'm not into huge power eating, heat farting machines.

yes but if you already have an SLI board then this GTSv3 is almos twice the price of a GT... and only a few percent faster...

You can litterally get 2 GT for 30$ more (if you ordered from dell)... that being said... you could also wait for an awesome deal like that on the GTS.

I'm definitely not regretting getting the EVGA SSC 8800GT on launch day for $239.99 + 6.99 shipping.

Besides that, if the 9000 series comes out in Feb like the rumors say, its really not worth the extra money

I dropped an email to evga asking if thenerds is an authorized reseller and if I could step up with a card for them. Worst case they say "no" and I sell my unopened 8800GTS for a few $ profit with the retailers sell them for $400+ by friday

Actually, I do hope they have enough stock so this is not another round of price gouging. It's been what, a month now, and you still can hardly find the 8800GT for the promised MSRP. Lame!

I"m beginning to think that for resolutions up to 1920x1200, anything over 512MB maybe isn't really necessary.

The GT 512MB is beating the GTS 640
The GTS 512MB is beating the GTX 768

Any comments?

Well... You have the evidence before you. If a card runs out of video memory and has to grab system memory through the PCI-E bus, performance drops drasticly. Since we do not see this in any of the benchmarks, I have to conclude that for current games and current high end resolutions, 512 MB is sufficient. By the time 512MB is not sufficient, it will not matter because the card will already be sub-par. This has always been the case. We are probably close to maxing out 512MB at 2560 x 1600 @ 4XAA/16XAF on some games. But, again, we hit a performance wall long before that mark anyway, so it does't matter so much.

Hi everyone, first time poster (and first time reader.) I'm on the hunt for the new GTS as well. Honestly, I don't need it (as opposed to the GT) since I only play at 1280x720, bu I want that dual slot fan.

I'm watching thenerds.net and it looks like their stock is doing weird stuff--it says "57" in stock, then I hit refresh and it says "100" and back again. wish I knew if they were authorized, or I'd pull the trigger on this right away.
