GA-7DXR raid question?

I was thinking about getting GA-7DXR mobo because it had the on board raid. I guess I don't quite understand how it works. Does the promise controller on board act like a normal ide controller to whatever OS is trying to use and behind the scenes it is actaully raiding two devices or do you have to load special drivers once you have the OS installed to get it to use RAID correctly. If that is the case how do you take advantage of RAID becuase you have just installed you OS. I also wondoer if linux would recognize the controller, if it doesn't there is always software raid. . Thanks for any help.

That board uses the light version of raid controller so you can only hook up 2 devices but it can be use as a regular ide controller, doesn't have to be raid.

Gandu is 100% right. The Fasttrack &quot;LITE&quot; controller let you work only with 2 drives in RAID. You can hook on 4 devices on the 2 RAID connectors, but then they will NOT work as RAID, just as regular ATA 100 drives (2 master and 2 slaves).


Single[/]drive operation (booting from which master you like):

IDE Connector: 1 master + 1 slave
RAID 1 Conncetor:1 master + 1 slave
RAID 2 Connector: 1 master + 1 slave


Raid[/] operation: (booting from the RAID array)

IDE Connector: 1 master + 1 slave
RAID 1 Conncetor: 1 Master
RAID 2 Connector: 1 Master

By the way: at www.amdmb.com they have dedicated single forums for board manufacturers, and in the Gigabyte forum, you find tons of posts about the 7DXR.

yes, it's now possible to make the LITE Promise a full Promise 100 Fasttrack controller.
Great, that really adds value to the board.
