Galaxy GT 240 question

I am new to AnandTech so please don't flame me as a noob. I bought a Galaxy GT 240 today for $95 or $55 after rebate (will send ASAP). After looking at the box cover, I can see that it has 1gb 128bit ddr3. Can someone tell me the extent of this card in gaming? The card is mainly for my dad (general use) but I'm sure me and my brother will want to play some games once in awhile [not entirely sure on what kind of games yet]. Many thanks guys. I will appreciate it if someone provides me with a benchmark or something simple for me. I'm not a computer techie but I am trying to built my first custom PC for my family.

Based on the GT 240's MSRP of $100, which doesn't make it a very good competitor to other cards available at or just a little more than $100. GT 240 w/GDDR3 is just below the performance of 9600GT in most cases, which is not bad at all for a card in the $60.00 price range.

IOW, GT 240 is fine @ $60 "ish", but not at $100 "ish". OP better follow the rebate instructions to the letter and get his rebate back. Otherwise, yeah, he paid too much.

Tscenter brings up a good point. I don't mean to discourage you, wintermint, on your first PC build but for 100 bucks the 240 ddr3 (and even ddr5 version, really) should, as the link says, be avoided like the plague. If the rebate goes through, then $55 ain't too shabby.

Good luck with the build, everyone makes little mistakes their first time through, but get better at it over time.

On the same day I saw a 4850 for $95 ($85 after promo or w/e) and free shipping. I was going to get that but my friend told me the gt 240 is good and I should get it. I saw it was for $55 compared to the $95 4850 and I chose the gt 240 since the card won't be used for gaming.

55$ is not a bad purchase for a gt240. Just overclock it, they overclock well.

4850 is a lot faster, but $55 isn't bad for a GTS 240. You can expect price gouging not based on performance in these lower end cards since there's a minimum price you have to pay just to buy the card just to have any graphics. That being said you can do some light gaming or use lower resolution and settings to play more intensive titles.

Count yourself lucky. These things usually drag on for months and many time you don't even get them. Now when I buy hardware I always look at the "out the door" price and never include rebates. That way if you don't get them then it's not the end of the world.

For 55$ AR that is a decent card for sure. Have fun with it.

I chose the gt 240 since the card won't be used for gaming.

If the card isn't being used for gaming, then it's fine. But it's not that hot of a gaming card, for gaming, a 4850 would have been much better.

I think that the GT 240 has fairly low power usage, so that's a plus.
