I find the SGSIII a two-handed product, which I find annoying.

This is the main reason why (whenever I get around to upgrading my phone) I'll likely stick with the iPhone5 instead of jumping ship to Android. I've got fairly big hands, and I still find it difficult to single-handedly use any of the new flagship Android phones that my co-workers and friends have.

The availability of OS updates is another plus. I get iOS6 today. How many people are still running ICS on their relatively new phones? Want to get JB? You'll often end up voiding your warranty.

I would've agreed as I was put off by the large size of the SGS3... but after using it, it's so very hard to go back. It's like when I made the move to the 30" monitor... some thought I was crazy, but I have a hard time ever going back to something smaller

If your wife gets the SGS3, try it out and see for yourself

I've played with a GS3 several times in-store. I know that's not the same as living with a phone and while it wasn't so huge that I couldn't live with it it was larger than I'd like. My wife keeps her phone in her purse so it's not that big of a deal, mine goes in my pocket (no holster for me) and sitting, driving, etc I don't want a monster in there.

I find the SGSIII a two-handed product, which I find annoying. The other annoying thing is the skin. In general I prefer the stock Android OS... although I'd prefer have no buttons on screen. For Android in general, I dislike the fact that part of the screen is wasted on those buttons.

It's a bit of a trade off. Yes part of the screen is wasted with said buttons but because there are no physical buttons the screen is bigger. I don't think you're necessarily losing real estate.

That's not a correct comparison. You don't have to put your 30" monitor in your pocket or carry it around one handed. The monitor sits on your desk.

Heh, good point.

The other issue I forgot to mention is I sometimes hit those on-screen buttons by accident when I'm typing. I never do that with physical buttons.

I was in the same boat, which to get. I saw the leaked beta iphone 5 specs and was like.. um, wtf? Where's the innovation? Really, a 4 inch screen? Had that for 2 years. 4g? yep, the EVO had that also. Extremely underwhelmed with this offering by Apple, and I generally love their stuff. Got the SGS3 instead and love love love the phone. Fast, awesome camera, great all around device.

I wouldn't mind if the iPhone 5 was a 4.8" device, but I can appreciate its compact form factor at 4"

A 4 inch screen is now a compact form factor. The times they are a-changin....

The parents arriving is classic.

Might be more true than you think. I was listening to a podcast (think it was one of the recent TWiT ones) where someone said that some teenagers were avoiding the iPhone because it's what their parents had.

It's similar with music, where even if the parents listened to some really great stuff, youth of a certain age have almost always wanted something different, even if they would later look back and realize that they listened to some pretty terrible music by most standards.

The EVO had WiMAX (not lte) and the battery life of 2min. The iPhone 5 is fast and sips battery power.

The SGS3 has an awesome camera? Uh...so does the iPhone 5.

Aren't they though?

Before the iphone, the trend was 2.8" devices. A couple of years after the iphone, 4.3" was considered large. Now, 5 years after the iphone, top tier android devices are 4.65", 4.7", 4.8", 5.3" and 5.5".

4", stretched long so the horizontal width hasn't changed, is compact, comparatively.

Furthermore, the increase in size of LCD monitors is dictated by manufacturing improvements. Back when they could only make small panels, a 15" monitor could cost you $800. I remember my mom wasting that much money on a monitor back then. I got a top of the line CRT for like $200-$300 for a 17" Beautiful 120 Hz display and stuff.

Then years later I bought her a Dell 2405 for like $600? It's like dirt cheap now. LCD monitors have gotten bigger because of cost reductions.

The same is happening with phones because pixel density is so high it costs quite a bit. But as that starts to improve, it seems we can then justify largeass screens. But yes, we do forget people want these in their pockets. Or to fit comfortably in one hand.

Here's an issue I'd like to bring up. Although I can hold an SGS3 ok, I feel like manipulating it is difficult. I was riding in the back of a scooter once and I whipped out my Nexus S and snapped beautiful photos and video. The larger the phone, the harder it is to press the power button, then swipe, then go to camera, rotate my phone to landscape, etc. I feel like it's easier to drop because it doesn't fit comfortably in my hand as much. There's more motion to shift to the upper and lower halves of the phone depending on what you're doing. Meanwhile on smaller phones you can just handle the phone as is without doing any shifting. And having medium sized hands puts me at average.

I foresee a mad rush to large and crazy screens, but then phone manufacturers will settle down and choose ergonomic sizes in the end and have a cleaned up lineup. It's just like the mad rush for phones and people released phones right and left, but realized that a condensed lineup is all that's needed. Well here we are too. There's going to be a limit reached soon for this mad rush for the largest screen.

I just got the Galaxy S III. The upgrade price for the 16 GB iPhone 5 ($149) was the same price for me as the 16 GB Galaxy S III, but I can use the existing MicroSD card from my Droid X to expand the memory on the Samsung.

Besides, I'm used to having a bigger screen at this point. I also don't want to spend the money to replace all of my existing Micro USB travel chargers and car chargers with Lightning chargers.

I think Apple computers are the most popular with the elderly.

"When it comes to home computers, nearly half (46%) of Apple's U.S. user base is 55 or older. That's compared with only 25.2% of home PC users who are in that age category, reports MetaFacts Inc., a national market research firm. " http://www.informationweek.com/hey-gramps-can-i-borrow-your-mac/196600880 The article is a bit old, so their phone demographics may be different.

lte has been out on android for over a full year, there were lte phones out before the 4s came out also.

apple is almost a full 2 generations behind with iphone now and in about 2 months every major android player will be on quadcore a15 chipsets

I have a brother who also complained about the big size of my GS2, but when I asked him to compare his Iphone and mine, they're both as same size. Why?
As I've observed and realized most Iphone users have a case to cover their Iphone when mine doesn't need to (only screen protector). That case adds size of the Iphone almost the same as my Galaxy S2!

Again, give the trolling a rest. 2 full generations behind, yet nothing is faster. And of course, newer phones will be faster then the next iphone will be faster than those, rinse and repeat.
