@Zaap: I did not expect such a passionate rebuke to my mild hope of seeing more advanced SOC on Android front. The thing is that the SOC performance on Android side has been advancing in snail's pace, especially if you discount the benefits reaped by the manufacturing node changes. A73 is not big of a performance leap from A57, and the latter is now more than 2 years old. Samsung has been working on its custom ARM SOCs, and I firmly believe that it has the will and capacity to produce a brand-spanking new SOC that can leap ahead of the generic ARM cores.

BTW I do not care for the iPhones. (mostly due to iOS and iTunes) The last iPhone I had and liked was the iPhone 4S, and I have been an Android fanboy since the Nexus 4. The S8 I've got recently is the best smartphone I have had, bar none. It is an engineering marvel that is almost hard to believe, considering what the Galaxy S3/S4 were merely 3~4 years ago.

But I do not agree with your assertion that "most people do not give a flying rat about "fast" and "smooth." Just look at how smoother Touchwiz on the S8 is compared to that on the Galaxys of yore. Samsung has made a tremendous stride towards ironing out Touchwiz, and it shows. As a matter of fact many of Samsung's home-grown apps operate smoother than Google's: Samsung Internet Browser is faster/smoother than Chrome, Galaxy Appstore loads faster and scrolls smoother than Play Store, and Samsung Health is more performant than Google Fit, etc. And compared to Samsung's own past endeavors? (e.g. things Samsung used to preinstall on Galaxy S3/S4) It is a night and day difference. Gone are the ugly, incoherent, and laggy mess, and now Samsung's apps are in some ways even better than Google's, both aesthetically and performance-wise.

All of this is a proof that users care smooth and coherent user experience and Samsung is keenly aware of that fact. And I of course appreciate that. But back on the original topic of the SOC, Apple's A11 is looming large and if the A10X on the new iPad Pro is a sign of things to come, it is going to bring yet another huge jump in performance. To add insult to injury, A11 is not even going to be that much bigger than the S835. Since the A10X (a hexa-core part) is 96.4 mm², the A11 (presumably a quad) should be smaller than that. The S835 is 72.3 mm² with LTE modem integrated. The size difference is no longer as big as it used to be.

But I digress. To make it short, I want to see a new performant SOC other than stock ARM cores from Samsung, Qualcomm, Kirin, or whoever. I mean, really the only flagship-grade SOC on Android that was not stock ARM cores was Krait, and that seems like a distant past now. Apple threw monkey wrench with its first 64-bit ARM SOC, which might have screwed whatever roadmaps they had been working with, but many years have passed since then and I think it is high time something new came along.

Wow, that's ridiculous. How much screen time was that?

Never really keep track. Couple of youtube videos. Random internet browsing. Couple hours with runtastic and road bike pro. Fitbit + bluetooth running. Music. Bored scrolling up and down though the news. No gaming on it. No social media apps other than whatsapp. I tend to use dark themes for websites and my backgrounds are black. Its on max resolution and no special settings to conserve battery.
I do use the phone and I don't recall that much downtime with it where it was sitting on the dresser or something.
I am going to guess that I'm not as glued my phone as other people or that those who are seeing poor battery life have a wider variety of apps and services running on their phone.

That's the longest I've gone without charging it. I usually I hook it up to the charger every other night when its at 30%-40%.

You don't have to keep track. If you tap the "screen" option that's usually in the top 3 for battery consumption, it'll tell you your screen on time.

^ Same here. Actually I have got the Gear 360 for $50 as well in a combo deal, which I have not bothered to open yet. If I sell that thing for more than $50 then I will have paid even less for the phone. Compared to what is out there, there is no better deal as long as your smartphone budget is $400+. Unlocked model has no bloat to speak of, which is nice, too.

Battery has held up well although stand-by drain has worsened since I got it. (it was too good to be true, I guess) Usually the phone has over 40% of charge left at the end of the day with 3~4 hours of SoT. It does not completely get rid of my battery anxiety, however.

Trade the Gear 360 for a unopened gear vr?

Unfortunately my nephew has shown interest in it which is why I have not sold it yet. But if he does not want it then sure we can arrange something.

Surprised people haven't been talking about Bixby's voice features finally being available in the US. How well is it working? I'm sure most of us would steer toward Google Assistant, but I'm curious as to whether or not Bixby is any good.

I just went through the setup process a few minutes ago, but I haven't actually tried using it yet.

I remapped the Bixby button to Google Assistant the day I got my S8+, but for some reason it doesn't launch Assistant in listening mode, so I use the regular home button hold for Assistant, and up until today I just had the Bixby button disabled. I will test Bixby later today and see how it goes.

I'm tempted to try Bixby, but I have Galaxy apps set to not update anything. The only Samsung apps I find myself using are Samsung Pay, and Health. I don't really care for the others as I prefer the Google alternative or a third party equivalent. I also received the July security patch on my TMo S8+ today.

I tried to set it up but all of the instructions are in Korean even though I selected English

Don't honestly know how to fix it... I've cleared the data for the Bixby app, which lets me select the language again but it still goes through everything in Korean despite selecting English.

edit: Tried to go into galaxy apps to search for updates, galaxy apps continued to crash so I rebooted. Now it's launching and shows a bunch of Bixby updates. I'll try those and see what happens

Edit 2: reboot and update fixed it.

It's not bad, but a little clunky. It works okay with your library in Google music, but I tried to start a radio station with voice and it didn't work. Still needs some work, but I find it as a potentially useful addition to Google's setup and not really a replacement

It works well with very specific instructions, but there's no "smart" to it. While navigating back home, I asked it a simple math question (which it heard correctly from the text shown) but it proceeded to show me my timeline instead. That's all I needed to see, the Bixby button has once again been disabled.

I tried it during my lunch today and while it still needs some work it does seem to be more capable than google assistance. Or it could be that I'm not giving the right instructions to google.

Ex. I tell google to route me to X. It'll get me to the route on the map but I still have to press start to start navigation. I do the same with bixby and it'll start navigation and everything.

Bixby can also control all these little settings that are unique to the s8 which google isn't able to do: set screen brightness to 50%, turn screen to landscape mode, turn off Always on display, close X app, go to home screen...etc. And for complete hands free in the car you can set a voice password and it will unlock with your voice. With google I have to reach over to wake it up first.

Whether you find this useful or not will probably depend on how comfortable you are with it always listening. Samsung doesn't have the cleanest track record for honesty.

Why do you have to touch your phone to use Google? The "ok Google" voice detection works great if you set it up

1. Coral Blue version (Unlocked!) now available @Samsung.com (Edit; It seems like this color option is only available for the unlocked version)

2. They now extended the trade-in offer to S5, iPhone 5/5S/6/6+/SE, G4/G5/G6, and Pixel/XL. $150 is kind of stingy for many of the qualifying phones, but for the older ones I think it's worthwhile to trade them in for $150 credit.

http://www.samsung.com/us/trade-in/

$150 off + $150 credit given for the older phones -> $425 for the S8. It's just about the same deal I've got for my S8. Only difference is that I did not have an option to choose Coral Blue color, and that I sent in my Nexus 4 for trade-in (which appears to be not accepted any longer)

They really want to push the unlocked version, it seems.

looked at the S8 the other day in-store but I think I'm holding off until LG releases something less iPhone-y than the G6. I'm still using a G4 from 2015 and I bought some replacement batteries for it a few weeks ago. admittedly I've never actually owned a Galaxy but fixed battery isn't for me. i have a good track record with preventing accidents so I don't really need the water protection.

Rumors are it has a 4000 mAh battery! Dammit, I wish they made the announcement sooner.
But it's supposed to be ATT exclusive...so maybe fewer incentives? One of my relatives for sure needs this version. We'll see how long the regular one survives.
