Man does the battery suck on this beast. Samsung should be ashamed about cripleing this otherwise terrific tablet with a dreadful battery. For this tablet to have even decent battery life it would need to be 50% bigger than it is. Had I known the battery life was this bad I would not have purchased. If you're looking at getting this tablet and battery life is important to you I'd advise you to look elsewhere.

On the Amazon product description page, it list the battery life as: "Up to six hours of battery life on one charge." Which means people can expect 4-5 hours in real world use. Yes, that's terribad battery life and definite deal killer.

I'm not seeing this battery life thing as that bad. I used it all day yesterday off and on from about 8am on and it still had about 45% around 8:30 pm. It wasn't heavy use mind you. Something seems off. And that description on Amazon just doesn't sound right. Unless that means heavy use time.

And today I've had it off the charger since about 4:30 on and it's 9:30 now and I'm at 63% basically surfin, facebookin, I transferred some pics from kayaking earlier today, nothing harsh.

Can I ask what you all are doing to only get 4 or 5 hours?

Anandtech's review seems to show good battery life, over 9 hours web browsing and over 10 hours for video play back at 40-50% brightness.

Well if some are getting 9+ hours and others, like me, are lucky to get 5 hours then maybe its a bad batch of batteries.

So, do I replace it? If I bring it in will they say I'm getting normal battery life or doing something that's killing it? I bought at Best Buy.

Purchased this Tablet recently, but the weight distribution doesn't make the tablet very comfortable when holding it IMHO. It's almost too thin.

Tell that to all the image over substance folks that insist each new version MUST be thinner than the one before. I swear, they wont be happy until there the thickness of a sheet of paper and have a battery that lasts 6 seconds...

I would prefer it to be a mm or two thicker and to use that space to put a bigger battery and grippier sides.

But, so long as many folks still demand the thinnest devices the makers will give THEM what they think they want and screw the rest of us that want a device that's actually useful.

I don't care if they make it thicker but I would care if they made it heavier. I bought a 8" tablet because I think the 10" tablets are too heavy. If they can figure out how to bring the weight down below 300g, that would be even better.

Well I agree that making it light is desirable and that there are weight penalties to a bigger battery etc. One of the reasons I went with an 8.4 tablet is as you say ... to not have to carry around something that big and heavy. OTH, make it too light and it once again becomes a bit hard to hold properly so I guess you can't have everything.

This issue is the same with smartphones as well and my current phone, the HTC One, has less than stellar battery life and if they'd made the phone a mm thicker and put a bigger, 3000mahr battery in it the lifespan of the charge would be greatly improved at only modest increase in thickness and weight. The other thing that hampers the feel of the One is the very tapered sides that LOOK really cool but if the side was another mm thicker it would be easier and safer to hold with less chance of dropping and breaking.

Apple has managed decent battery life from slim devices with smaller batteries, but they limit what you can do and the OS is less powerful and there customers are more tolerant of that so they get away with it -- not so Android.

My tab comes tomorrow, getting excited. Has anyone rooted this yet? I am leery of kitkat's MSD issue and want to nip that first thing if possible.

Haven't rooted but it seems like it's fairly straightforward. Somewhat concerned about the Knox eFuse. Any reports of warranty problems once rooted?

Got it and rooted. Easiest root I ever did. Had to because kit Kat stinks for SD card. Enjoying it immensely.

Anyone tried CM11? I hate touchwiz the more I use it.

EDIT: BTW to those wondering, battery life isn't the greatest, but it certainly does what i need and I like how it works compared to iPad.

How are you guys draining the battery so fast? I've had this device for like a week and only had to charge it once. BTW, how do I get rid of that bubble sound?

My battery is OK. I've been using it most of yesterday and watched 3 movies last night and still have 30%. I turned off the bloop sound in the sound settings under system. Disable "touch" sounds.

Thanks. BTW, is this a new TW? It doesn't seem bad at all. Must be because this is a tablet and not a phone but I have no problem with it. What would be the advantages of rooting this tablet? That would be no more automatic updates, right?

For me I rooted to get around kit Kats control of the ability to move apps to the SD card.
