How do you guys set the grightness in your games?

I seem to have a problem with all of the games I play being way too dark. And not just dark, like the designer wanted to make it dark and creepy, I mean ridiculously dark I can't see a damn thing. What I've tended to do in the past is bump the gamma and brightness on my desktop, then go into the game, and that seems to work, or I've used Powerstrip and configured the birghtness to use when loading a specific game.

That's worked OK, but now I'm playing SoF2 and no matter what you seem to do from the desktop it has no effect on what happens in game. I've set the brightness to max in the game, I even edited the cfg file and bumbed it in there as well to what seems to be the max, but it is still way too dark, I can't hardly see a thing.

Monitor is set to max as well, anybody have any sort of idea on what to do to make it brighter?

So if you didn't make thoese adjustments, you will only see a black screen
Um... by the look of thins, it seems that the adjustments you made aren't working. I only play CS and all i do it adjest the ingame gammer and monitor brightness. That works fine. I think other people weill help you more.

If your card/driver supports it, try bumping up what's called the digital vibrance setting. On my GF4 card it's under the nview settings, I think. This is not the game as gamma correction.

I kick this setting up a notch to enhance games with a lot of dull/dark textures. Works great to enhance Morrowind.

nVidia's gamma control and in the rare occasions it doesn't work I use PowerStrip.

That's worked OK, but now I'm playing SoF2 and no matter what you seem to do from the desktop it has no effect on what happens in game.
That's odd as usually games will either brighten themselves adequately or your can force them to get brighter from the driver control panel.

Try using r_gamma in the game and increasing the brightness with that.

Failing that, PowerStrip should be able to force any game to be brighter, just make sure you have the latest version as earlier versions had problems with gamma control in some cases.

Yea, that's what is wierd, PowerStrip seems to be having no effect on it at all, I used that for every other game I played before. It's almost like the game is at some maximum brightness that it can't go past or something. I'm using PowerStrip 3.15 Build 268, so that is a pretty new one.

I have set r_gamma in game to be 3.0 which is apparently the maximum value because any setting higher than that has no effect. I checked the settings but I don't seem to have this "Digital Vibrance" setting with my card.

This is really frustrating....

I would seriously consider trying another monitor.

I play SOFII and don't have to turn the brightness up at all unless I'm playing during the day because the ambient light is too much in my puter area.

Well, it's the same monitor I've always used, I can bump the gamma and brightness up to some ridiculous level on the desktop that it blinds myself, but when SoF2 loads up, I can't make it any better.

Your problem is quite odd Sparky and about the only other thing I can suggest is that you try the latest 2942 drivers. In the past some nVidia drivers have had problems with certain games and gamma correction so it might pay to give these drivers a go.

What 3d settings are you using?! I noticed in UT that when I switched to opengl(from D3D) my monitor would be seriously dark, even after I cranked up the brightness(in/out of game), opengl just wouldn't get any brighter, now as soon as I switch to D3D, my video was real bright and would respond to diffrent brightness settings.

Hope I have helped at all! Dion

Have you tried new drivers for your card? You said that you also max out your monitor. Does that include the contrast setting?

Well, I haven't tried the very latest drivers, but I have had this problem as long as I've had the card, back since the 10 and 11 series drivers. So, I don't think the brand new ones will make much of a difference, I'm currently running the 28.90 drivers, and have tended to use a new set every couple weeks.

Yes, on my monitor the contrast and brightness are both pumped to the max.

Well, I just solved the problem. I had to uninstall powerstrip, go through the registry and delete everything related to it and then reinstall it, I also checked a few of the options to use when launching sof2, and it seems to be working now. I don't know why powerstrip was messed up, because I had only just formatted this machine a few weeks ago when I finished school, and it was freshly installed then.

However, it works now, thanks to everybody who helped me out.
