Gamer asking LCD or CRT?

Near the end of last year I bought a Dell 1800FP LCD for my main gaming rig. The monitor is absolutely gorgeous, no streaking at all. Text and DVD movies look fantastic... now games on the other hand do NOT look as great as they should. For example, my system cant reasonably handle more then 1024 x 768 in Far Cry. The native res on my monitor is 1280x1024 and as you can imagine, the monitor does not look its best when running at another resolution. I'm a hardcore gamer, own in excess of 40 pc games and am always buying any good games that come along. I've been thinking about selling the LCD and buying something like
this.. I'd have the same screen size, good gameplay output and come out a few bucks ahead. On the other hand, the brightness and clairity for DVDs and text is amazing on this screen.. seems like a shame to get rid of it.

LCD or CRT? Any opinions? thanks..

well, crt's are faster for gaming then lcd's, but unless u plan on spending at least $550 for a fast lcd, place your bets on crt's.

maybe get a better graphics card so that you can run the games at 1280x1024. then they will be at the native resolution and they will look good. in a month or 2 we will have the new acards frm NVidia out, probably ATI to . wait for one of those then they will all play at full resolution

Hercules 9800 Pro and 1800XP @ default 1.53ghz. I need a faster cpu..

edit: another thing, a lot of games won't allow you to run at 1280x1024. Command and Conquer Generals for example...

You could get a faster CPU, and it would help, but not that much. I'd keep your LCD and put up with the poor performance in those select few games, there are plenty of games that run just fine at 1280x1024 on a 9800 right now.

How about keeping the LCD and buying the CRT and having a dual monitor setup You will have the best of both worlds.

Do you absolutely have to play game with full screen?

I have a Philips 200P3. The native resolution is 1600x1200. So I turn off the scaling from monitor's OSD. For games that demand more than my system can offer, I play @ lower resolution. Black boarder doesn't bother me at all.

all the hardcore gamers i know demand the very best in CRT's to up either their fps. I am running a Samsung 191N, paired with a Radeon 9800 pro. I play counterstrike 1.6, halo pc, and battlefield 1942 on it, and i have no complaints. but i am far from a hardcore gamer. were i in your position, i'd upgrade my parts and play with the lcd

just use both. dual monitor is where its at, best of both worlds. lcd is premium gaming... while still not quite as good for refresh still 16ms is optimal measurement for black to white.. so its misleading. spending enough money to run all games at 1280x1024...not fun either as you've found out.
