Gaming LCD panels.

Ok, a thread that obviously sounds like an echo. Basically, i am looking at getting an lcd screen for my comp. I do play games on it and watch movies. So i need a fastish screen. should i go for a 17" 16ms screen at £140. or a 17" 8ms for like £200? AND is it worth blowing £280 on a sony x-black 17". It says 8ms, but i'm sure it means 16!!

Finally, the dell's are great prices at the moment! E173FP for £153 with 3 yr onsite warranty! Is it worth taking the middle ground ond going for one of these 16ms beauties?

I think you should get the 8ms one. 16ms is acceptable, but not great. I would think that now 12ms is the new minimum for getting an LCD. As for sonly x-black. If it's the technology that I think it is - the colors and contrast do look amazing on it. It's because of this coating that can glare worse than a CRT though, so I wouldn't recommend it. Especially for that price.

That looks like an old dell monitor. Dell sells 1704FPT now. And the extra T makes all the difference.

curious though, which 17" 8ms are you looking at?

they seem few and far between. Iiyama do some 10ms ones, tho they're out of stock. The sony seems to be the only one suggesting 8ms in 17". tho i found this on another site:

As I often start in the 'CRT vs LCD' discussion:
There is no such thing as a gaming LCD.

Having said that, dont get the Iiyama. Thats what I have for my office machine.
Works fine, but I would never play games on it. (Except emulators).

If you insist on an LCD go for the Dell or Sony.

There are 4ms LCDs out now, go for that. Definately not Sony, Samsung or Viewsonic are my picks.

i have the iiyama e431 in black, the newer 435's simply have a restyled exterior and faster response...either way i love mine, no dead pixels, no ghosting (16ms too), very bright and very good quality even with a analogue input (havent noticed anthing goin VGA->DVI to be honest)

you really cant go off response time that manufacturers give can you? i thought there was no set standard for response times, one manufacturers 4ms cant be compared to another's 4ms coz theyve probably tested it differently to get the best out of it, coz they know people will go for the better numbers when they buy

I have a 16 ms cheaper LCD, and play 2/3 RPG games, and about 1/3 older FPS games (UT2003, Wolf: ET). I'm perfectly happy with it, and don't notice any ghosting. Games seem a little better with the DVI connector as well. Mine would be something equivalent to the "19" Digimate L-1918D TFT with DVI", or something like that. About the same specs.

if you're a gamer, just get a CRT monitor. they're better for games.

IF you're going LCD there are more things to take into account than response time alone. Dot pitch (how large the dots making up your screen are) is a huge consideration along with contrast ratio, color depth, aspect ratio, and cost. I've taken to using my 2005FPW for gaming and leaving my 21" trinitron turned off most of the time.

yeah, contrast varies a lot! as does the cd/m2 thing! (brightness?). Thats a 20" 12ms widescreen dell isnt it? some people seem to accept lcd's for gaming, and some dont! is all very confusing! you can get decent hyundai CRT's with footprints 2" smaller than standard for that size. 15" footprint on the 17" monitor for instance. i just dont know. i want to shrink teh amount of space my pc takes up! and a CRT is looking increasingly hungry for space!!! Granted LCD's will take many years until they reach a similar refresh rate. Guess its down to what you're prepared to lower yourself to. BIG fat screens, or slightly ghosting images? I knew i should have bought a useless graphics card! then i wouldnt be in this position! but no... I had to spend £280 on one...
