I'm building my Ultimate Gaming System, I bought everything except a Monitor. I'm having problems choosing the Right one for me. Here are the choices:

NEC/Mitsubishi FP2141SB-BK 22" SuperBright Diamondtron CRT Monitor

Dell UltraSharp 2001FP 20.1" Flat Panel LCD Monitor

Samsung 213T-Black 21" Flat Panel LCD Monitor

ViewSonic VP201B 20.1" Flat Panel LCD Monitor

This will be mainly for Gaming however I'm pretty much going to use it for everything else. My video card with be eVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra Video Card. Only problem I'm seeing about the CTR Monitor is that its to big (19.5" x 19.1" x 18.5" - 65.7 lbs). Unfortunatly I can't seem to find any Flat Panel LCD Monitors with the same quality. Do any of this Flat Panel LCD Monitors come close to the quality of the NEC/Mitsubishi CTR Monitor?

All those are outstanding. For gaming though I have to choose the CRT IQ is crisp just like the LCD's with true blacks, instant frames at every resolution.

The samsung is porbably the best IQ of them all but has serious ghosts.

The Dell and veiwsonic are identical...and a happy medium...

Some people love CRT's and hate LCD's. Some are the complete opposite and there are some that like both.

Personally, I have no problems with my LCD but thats me.

I dont think you can go much wrong with the CRT and as long as the LCD's have below 25ms response time, they should be ok (in my opinion). My LCD has 16ms response time and I see no ghosting. Whether the LCD's compare to the CRT's quality is subject to your own opinion. Looking in a local store and comparing them would be the best bet.

If I may, Id like to suggest some form of projector or TV as a display. A very expensive solution but if its ultimate you want, this could be what you are looking for. Some TV's/Projectors can display a rather high quality picture on an even bigger screen. If you have deep pockets filled with cash, this might best provide the quality you desire for your 'Ultimate Gaming PC' experience.

Thanks for the suggestion, however I don't think I'll go to a Projector or a TV. I already have a great TV I could be able to use, but its just when using a TV, for me atleast I'd never be able to get comfortable. I prefer gaming behind a desk, and being comfortable is a huge issue for me when it comes to my Gaming Performance and Expierence. If I hook it up to my TV I'll be sitting on the floor. It'd be great for watching Movies but for Gaming nothing would be as good as a Monitor, unless you have those Plasma TVs.

Personally, I really like LCDs. I have been using mine for about a month now and even though it is a 25ms response time monitor I have had no sign of ghosting. Picture also looks great. While there is no question that nothing beats a high end CRT in terms of refresh, resolution, and IQ I like the LCD cuz it is easier on the eyes and takes up a lot less room. I would go w/ the Dell 20.1" but that is just me.

I'm saving up for the 22" NEC/Mitsubishi.

I bought and returned the Samsung 213T. It was an amazing monitor, just not for gaming. I tried multiple games, on multiple PC's w/ various video cards, and ghosting was a problem.

For gaming, nothing beats a high quality CRT. I still keep my 21" IBM P260 Trinitron strictly for my gaming PC.

For the ultimate gaming monitor, you need to get the Sony GDM-FW900. Not only is it a 24" widescreen CRT monitor (viewable is 22.5), but you'll get all the best things about CRTs, AND get the widescreen of a 23" LCD. Of course, this beast is a tonne.

I've got a 21" Trinitron tube here, and I love the image quality and the sharpness of text. Great monitor.
I've not seen any of the new "fast response" LCD's, but I have seen the output on my laptop. Ignoring its ghosting, I really don't think it's any sharper than the Trinitron.
Maybe a new LCD would look nicer, I don't know. I haven't got the money to try out one.
Any ghosting though, especially while scrolling on a website, could easily be a deal breaker. It gets really distracting on the laptop - and it makes reading while scrolling impossible. Of course, its response time is probably something like 50ms or higher. Active matrix, but not exactly new.

Oh yeah, one other thing that I really don't like about LCD's is the whole native resolution thing. CRT's look good at any resolution. LCD's....well, they give you free FSAA, courtesy of pixel interpolation, on anything if you're not using their native resolution. And I generally don't like the native res. For example, my resolution preference for CRT's has been:
15" - 640x480
17" - 800x600
21" - 1024x768

My laptop's 14.1" LCD is set to 1024x768. It took a good bit of tweaking to get it close to normal for me - everything was just so tiny.

The CRT is best for Gaming in my book as the reponse time is sometimes lagging. Also, the brightness control that you have over a CRT is better in my opinion.

I presently have a FE1250+ 22"

they oem, just like viewsonic. they both oem from LG i think. btw, the viewsonic and 2001fp monitors you listed are the exact same thing. i'd go for the dell one just because they can go for cheaper.

Any Ultimate Gaming Machine with an LCD Screen would be kind of ... dumb lol. Maybe if you played RTS and Turn Based strategy games all day.

LCD's are closing the gap however, but just not as good as a CRT for gaming. LCD's now have faster response times, but they sacrifice viewable angles to do so.

Problem is it's 16:10, no games support such an aspect ratio leaving destortion and /or black lines.

No you want the 19" with single electron gun. the 930SB. which eliminates that varied dot pitch accross screen for perfect convergence.

No, the Mitsubishi sb-930 is the same. Those have a truly flat screen, no flat plane of glass in front of a slightly curved tube. They use the u-nx gun which is a 1 gun as opposed to the stock nec 3 gun on the 991. They have .24 dp.

Have you ever figured out the diff between these three:

For pure gaming...nothing beats an aperture grill. Esp one from NEC/Mitsubishi.
