SLI motherboard with dual 6800GTs. There you go. WD 74 Raptors too while you're at it. Damn I wish I had your budget.

i'm not sure i'd go the SLI route even with that kinda budget... i think i'd wait and get a 512meg card and definitely go the FX route!

that's just me tho.... and yeah man i wish i had that budget!

1: Go to Alienware.com
2: Build a system for $3000
3: Write down the specs
4: Go to newegg and build it yourself for $1900
5: Profit

Yea, I mean I'm no n00b at this myself. I just put together a 6800GT SLI system for me, but quite frankly I've had some problems with it, and I'm frustrated that all the games aren't supported.

I think I'll recommend the x850 to my friend, with a DFI nForce 4 Ultra mobo.

Good Point. I still am not sold on SLI and please give me a link to where I can pick up a 6800GT for 227 because I will order a bunch of them

this looks like a very nice gaming rig to me...minus the A2 to keep it under 1900

I'm in the market for a gaming rig around the same budget. Here is what I've come up with.

AMD 3800+
Thermalright XP-90
MSI Neo4 SLI
1GB Corsair
2x WD 74GB Raptor 10k
ATi X850 XT or a BFG 6800GT OC
Lian Li PC-60
TTGI 550w Super Silent PS

Target game: World of Warcraft. Love playing at 1600 x 1200.

Any recommendations?

Don't get the SLI board if you get the x850xt. That would be dumb.
Actually I wouldn't go with SLI either way.
And you don't really need anything other than the stock HSF.

Yay grammar nit-picking!
"budget" doesn't just mean cheap, it can also mean "money put aside or reserved for some purpose". So $1900 budget means just that - $1900 to spend on his new pc.

Consider this RAM

Why the OCZ PSU? for that price you could get a Seasonic S12-500. Quieter and more efficient.

NEC floppy > Sony floppy. .50c cheaper too.

also... there are better places to get stuff than newegg.

I would highly recommend some Raptors (or some form of 10k rpm drive) - it will make a world of difference.

Personally, I have an X850 XT and I game at 1900x1200 and it's amazing. I'd highly recommend it. As for SLI, realistically if it ever does "take off" it's going to be quite a while before that happens so I wouldn't recommend it now. Dual core procs will be affordable probably in a year so I'd get a 3200+ or 3500+ now and save some money for a CPU upgrade then. (At least, that's what I'm planning).

That's my plan too, but I have heard many people say that you should get a 4000+ or not go AMD at all, which is rubbish imo...

Also, any less powerful processor would end up way under budget... unless you stick in two raptors in RAID, but is that worth it?

Don't RAID raptors, you'll get almost no performance gain for what you spend. One raptor is fine if you want one.

When you have a $1900 budget, "dollar for dollar" is a retarded way to configure a machine.

You can get this:

AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Winchester

120mm Panaflo fan
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
eVGA Geforce 6800GT
1GB PC3200 Crucial Ballistix
Antec TruePower 550W PSU
Antec P160 case
Plextor 716SA

^^ Exactly what I got except for CPU for $1700.00 shipped.

So you're saying that spending $400 for -15 - +30fps (when you're already well above 75fps where even the peripheral vision can't tell anymore) isn't retarded?

What if the OP's friend has an LCD? Clearly SLI would be bad choice then.

Since you are not OCing i would go with some cheap 512MB valueram modules, CAS latency is not a big deal for A64s so just go with the cheapest brand you are comfortable with.

As for SLI, its the fastest option right now, period. Not all games are supported but support will be coming very soon.

My reccomendation:

AMD 64 "Venice" (coming extremely soon and worth the wait) 3500+ $300

DFI SLI $215

PQI Power series 512MB (2 of these) CAS2.5 PC3200 $86

Evga 6800GT (2 of these) $800

200GB WD SATA Hard drive $123

Antec Truecontrol PSU 550w $111

Onboard Audio and LAN $0

DVD-Rom of choice ~$40

"Case budget" mentioned above ~$100

That leaves you around $100 to play with, you could upgrade to better CPU cooling, a more expensive case, a DVD-RW, or a number of other things.

Whatever you decide, this config would be a great performer.
