I'm helping a friend build a brand new computer from scratch. No components shared with any prior machine (he has a laptop now), so everything from case to monitor to you-name-it has to be bought. Except software, some other friend is lending a hand on that front. Don't worry about software.
This is to be first and foremost a gaming rig. Everything else is of secondary concern.
The person in question has stated that he desires the computer to be built around the Nvidia GF7950 GX2. So that's what I'm going with, this component probably won't be changed - but a lot of other items are still up for debate.
Given the price point, I've already consulted with a few guy buddies who game (way) more than I do. A basic build has been discussed and refined, as well as a suggestion by my friend to post said intriem build here for the forum to examine. So, here it is:
Philips 200P4VS 20 IN. LCD Monitor
ASUS A8N-SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Manchester 2000MHz HT 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core Processor
OCZ OCZ600GXSSLI GAMEXSTREAM 600W ATX12V V2.2 SLI POWER SUPPLY
OCZ Platinum Edition 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 500 (PC 4000) Dual Channel Kit System Memory
BFG Technologies BFG BFGR-7950GX2-1GB-OCE GF7950GX2 1GB Graphics Card
Maxtor 300GB 7200RPM 16MB BUFFER SERIAL ATA/150 3.5INCH Hard Disk
Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-FI Xtreme Music Sound Card
Logitech Z-5500 5.1 Speakers/Sub
THERMALTAKE Armor VA8000SWA Silver Computer Case
From what I can see the above will cost about $2400. That total does not include tax, shipping, other fees, keyboard, mouse, optical drives, etc. Also does not include a few more fans/coolers my friend and I would like to include in the build to take advantage of the ThermalTakes airflow capabilities (ie, Asus StarIce Cooler).
There is a very small amount of wiggle room in that $3K figure. Anything over the cap would have to score very high in "bang for the buck" to be included.
Questions, comments? Tweaks possible to improve system performance? Stuff missing that should be included? Substitution appropriate to lower cost? Best places to get all this stuff in the Bay Area, CA (where we're from) or online? Already perused NewEgg for a lot of stuff. Any suggestions or input through PMs or this thread would be welcome. We'd like to start/finish the build within 2 weeks.
(Topic from SFF forum, not sure if that was the right place to post it so I brought it here)
