1997 Mazda 626 LX (I4) (work beater) 28-35 MPG
2005 Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe (Vtwin) (big fun) 37-45 MPG

Gas isn't a problem for me.

i believe you can get $.40/mile (or at least $.385). If he gets 30 mpg he is getting reimbursed $12 for each gallon he uses. You have to factor in wear & tear on the vehicle but I don't think it is $9/gallon so this = profit.

I just have a 91 Continental with a 3.8L V6, too bad the gas gauge stopped working last week. That and the speedometer\odometer, broken motor mount, FM radio and a couple other things. Good thing the tape player still works

I just ordered a Land Rover Discovery LR3 diesel SUV, weighs nearly 4000 lbs, but with a 6-speed manual gets ~30mpg mixed city/highway. With permanent 4WD and seats seven.

Of course, they won't import such a vehicle into America, because it takes 11 whole seconds to go 0-60. Someone might question your manliness to not be able to do it in 8.0. (although with 400 ft/lbs of torque it goes 10-40 very quickly - I think 1st is very low for rock crawling).

There was an article recently about how all of the modern vehicle and engine technology that has been developed in the past 20 years has gone stricly into making cars faster. That the average car fuel efficiency was actually worse now than it was then, BUT 0-60 times had gone down, way down. And the average size had increased as well.

I think that the Europeans have developed cars that are very much more advanced than the US in fuel efficiency...too bad they don't export them to the States. You can get quite a few more gallons of diesel from a barrel of crude than gallons of gas, and you can use crude that AFAIK is of lower quality. Current Euro III and Euro IV diesel engines have CO2 emmissions that are not any worse than a gasoline V8 or even a large V6.

Oh, and as I am on assignment over here, my company gives me a gas credit card for both business and personal use. Although I understand that I am taxed on that, and it is NOT pretty at the end of the year.

Yes, you do have the right to b!tch about it.

But don't expect anyone to feel sorry for you.

The people that are hurt the most by the increasing energy prices are those on low incomes and fixed budgets (read: mainly disabled and elderly). As well as the working man/woman who has a long commute. The big earners like yourself don't have anything to worry about.

I'm fortunate to be able to afford all the gas I can burn too, but, remember, not everyone is so fortunate.

First of all, I don't expect anyone here to feel sorry for me.

Second, funny how you are so quick to judge without even knowing me. Just because I drive a Lexus, that makes me a big earner now? For your information (not like you care), I just graduated from college and have been working since sophomore year of high school because my parents are from low income background. I worked my ass off all through college to pay for my own tuition, clothes, RENT, books...everything because I didn't want to burden my parents. The only reason why I could afford a lexus is because I moved back home so I won't have to pay for rent ($600 a month for the past 4 years). So before you make assumptions about who I am as a person, learn a bit about me first.

Uh... in order to drive a brand new Lexus, you'd have to either have a high income or be an idiot. Would you rather he assumed the former or the latter?

You worked your ass off to pay your way through college, because your parents are low income. Should you get a prize for this? Welcome to being an adult. Then, you decided you wanted a luxury car so to afford it, you MOVED BACK HOME to live with your low income parents. You admitted to not having to pay for rent. So you live at home rentfree, while your parents are paying rent/mortgage.

I took your advice and learned about you first. Not cool!

I was at a gas station this morning and saw a guy filling up some large metal containers, (20 gallons?) in his trunk.

Panic mode has arrived.

95 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Rated by the government @ 20city/30highway, but it's just had a brand new motor put in and I've only put gas in once since then, so I've not had much opportunity to get real-world numbers.
