Gateway Laptop

Roommate has a gateway laptop. This thing turns on and it goes to the screen that lets you boot the kind of bootup (ie - safe mode, safe mode w/networking, etc...). I've tried all the different boots and it won't bootup at all. It'll load up the drivers and then the screen will just go blank.

I've never worked on any laptop before, wtf is wrong? Any guesses?

few weeks back my kids friend brought over a dell nb with same problem...... i ran the internal diagnostic program (part of the bios menu) and it couldn't pass the hard drive test..... he called dell , read the tech error codes and new drive was sent out..... point being, i would assume gateway has some kind of diagnostic to run before you get into windows, just have to find it

hrm...gotta check on this, last time I only saw the choice to go into the bios
