Sorry for posting this.... I didn't mean to get disrespect as a response. Sorry. For those who gave a decent comment, thanks.

this is an extremely debatable topic I love AMD dont get me wrong but Intel has made some very nice chips in the past, their main problem IMO has always been pricing but they have produced quality components just like AMD.

uh okay. mr. zlot.

" I think I tend to lean towards AMD better because they label things more clearly like 'socket A' "

yes i love it when they name things with a single letter.

"It just seems like all the people who have a taste for style, speed, and inovation love the AMD processors. Why are more 'radical' people turning to AMD?"

i dont get how u can get radical from that description. then will u say that those who buy Pentiums dont have a " taste for style, speed, and inovation"

"in the past i've ripped apart and rebuilt 486 and 386 intel computers.... but i've never built one from scratch like I have done with AMD so many times."

huh? okay. you KNOW u can build a intel platform from scratch right? its not a new thing..

" I love how AMD's infostructure and design kicks intels asz on the lower ghz models,"

yes, i do agree that the INFO structure does kick some "asz" on the LOWER ghz models. >_<

"and keeps the chips at a low low price compared to intel"

they do it because they can.

:::sigh:::

With the introduction of the Northwood P4s, Intel is making a pretty good comeback with the performance crowd. The fact that your local store doesn't have them only shows how behind the curve they are.

if i walked into the local store where i'm from and ask anything about AMD they would look at me and say something like... those are soo unstable and unreliable... how about we fit you with a nice pentium III gateway

Ah... Let me guess, you are an AMD Zealot? My local store offers both, but denounces AMD because of their instability, incompatability, and fragileness. They crack very often, in fact, the store displays cracked AMD cores.

I am not trying to flame, I am just providing the truth.

Intel side was all out of stock for processors. I was like, hummmmm why's that guys? They said they didn't really carry them anymore...

Or perhaps they're out of stock because they're really popular?

As much as certain AMD zealots have trouble believing this, there are very good reasons to stick with Intel.

Our local comp store sells both AMD and Intel but in their leaflets always have an AMD system on the front page as best bang for buck...

...P4 systems are usually on page 2

You mean a stupid post like this would drive you away from one of the best sites on the net?

listening to what any store says is trouble. I know a place that stopped selling AMD due to instability, because their ignorant asses used the same heatsinks for 1.4Ghz Tbirds as 800Tbirds.

LOL! Well put, talk 'is' cheap - especially talk based on ignorance - nothing gets me more erked than that. Instability/heat issues = Bah! use the right heatsink, Incompatibility = Bah! learn to troubleshoot, Cracked cores = Bah! Be more careful, treat it like a baby!

Bah!

Wouldn't it be funny, if it turned out that Intel secretly owned AMD..........

I personally think both platforms have their merits and their detractors. I really don't even see why the more intelligent people on the net even bother to debate this subject. In all honesty, AMD does have several downsides for your average computer user. Heat (which is probably why it is constantly being blamed as being unstable) is a major problem with AMD and has been since the K6's. Improper cooling is always going to lead to unstable systems, be they AMD or Intel. Please don't get me wrong, I run an AMD rig and am very happy with it. But as a builder (small-time), I have a real hard time recommending an AMD to someone who doesn't use AC in the summer or is going to shove their computer in a the space provided in computer desks (especially ones with doors on them). They are going to have problems, not ones based on their design, but ones based on a side effect of running warm and heat buildup (lack of ventilation). Home DVD players, digital cable boxes and many other modern devices suffer from high failure rate from improper ventilation so I don't think of the extra heat as a reason for not purchasing AMD, just something that needs planned for if you do decide to go that way.

My biggest gripe with Intel is cost. This has nothing to do with function though, just a moral issue for me. The only hardware issue that really bothered me was the Pentium 4 (also the unstable Pentium III 1.13's that they put out kinda looked a little desperate at the time). They put out a processor that had been castrated simply to run at higher clock speeds in order to cut the loss of market share. I guess this was a wise decision, since it worked. I just personally think that for that time really affected whether I would buy Intel. With the really high speeds (and potential for much more) of the Northwood core, I am seeing the fruition of their plan finally so it no longer bothers me quite so bad.

In conclusion, I think that holding on to a product as if it was your family and needed protected is just not too bright. I say do the research, make an informed decision and then be happy with it. If someone else doesn't choose your way, then they are not evil or stupid and don't need to be castigated like this is a schoolyard and your ready to pick a fight because someone looked at you funny. You know one thing that has always bothered me, was when I would read a review of something I just bought and found out the review was calling it crap. Really made me feel bad about what I had (the product usually ends up running just fine for me).

Anyway, thats just my opinion. Take or leave it.

<< When I decided to build my system around a 1700+ XP, I went to some local computer stores to check out the deals they had. Heh, it was kind of funny when I went in because I noticed that the (seperated) Intel side was all out of stock for processors. I was like, hummmmm why's that guys? They said they didn't really carry them anymore...I forget the reason why though. heh. They had just gotten a new shipment of AMD processors in and the prices were gladly reduced so I was happy. It just seems like all the people who have a taste for style, speed, and inovation love the AMD processors. Why are more 'radical' people turning to AMD? Is it because most people finally realize that someone is stepping up to the giant Intel?

In the past i've ripped apart and rebuilt 486 and 386 intel computers.... but i've never built one from scratch like I have done with AMD so many times. I think I tend to lean towards AMD better because they label things more clearly like 'socket A' ....but i think thats just me. lol. I love how AMD's infostructure and design kicks intels asz on the lower ghz models, and keeps the chips at a low low price compared to intel. Keep it up AMD. I luv u
