Geforce 6800 Heat Issues

I recently sent my GeForce 6800 card back to XFX for warranty replacement. I am not sure what happened to it, it I had artifacts and all that mess during boot. At any rate, the card was pronounced dead and returned for replacement.

Anyway, I get the new card back, and while playing America's Army this weekend, I notice that the card is running at 111 degrees! I never saw temps over 80 with the card before I sent it back, but now it is climbing through the roof. Any clue as to what is happening? I am running the 81.98 drivers.

a faulty temperature monitor maybe? the best test would be to play a game for a few hours, turn off your system, and then feel the back of the card or the heatsink part with your hand. if it's warm and not like burning hot, then you shouldn't have any worries. also, do you see any artifacting in games? i can't imagine something running that hot and still be stable.

I have been playing America's Army and Trackmania Nations since I got it back three days ago, and so far I have had no problems with stability or artifacting or anything like that. I don't even know what made me check the temperature of the card, I just felt the need to do so.

I was planning on acquiring an Iceberq 5 to slap on it this week. If I put that on the card and still show high temps, then I may have a bad temperature monitor.

What are the idle temps?? Are they high as well?? check your case ventilation and see if anything is blocking shroud on the card.

email XFX and tell them what you have noticed with the card., save emails for future warranty considerations.

At idle I am at 69C, 40C Ambient.

Seems normal for your ambient temps.

is the cooler hot or only warmish/cold?
If its the latter, a reseat of the cooler can be on order.
