To be fair... I think he meant you couldn't do the Hollywood treatment on racing movies without making you gag. *cough* Driven *cough* Le Mans and Grand Prix exempted (which are 40 years old btw), the only other films about racing that have been noteworthy of late are documentaries (Senna, Faster 1 & 2, Love the Beast, etc.) because they present the 'real thing'.
Ferrari was pretty interesting too : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0346946/

where Lucas got lucky with one franchise and now he's a pioneer of the film industry.

his FX/Sound stuff made him a Pioneer, Lucas Light and Sound was the premiere studio for that for what, 3 decades?

Red Tails has the potential to be good but I fear levels of corniness as bad as Armageddon's or being beaten over the head with political correctness.

Industrial Light and Magic still is one of the top effects studios. A lot of image and video processing stuff we take for granted today originated from ILM.

While I'm not diminishing the capabilities of ILM by any means, I think it's good to keep in mind that there's a good chance that if Jobs never bought PIXAR from Lucas, it wouldn't be anything like it is today. It is still possible that Lucas could have transformed the group from a mostly hardware focus into an animation focus as well.

Pixar under Lucas was a hardware company trying to sell its hardware to the US and the US Military as well as corporations.

Lucas sold Pixar to Steve Jobs. John Lassater convinced Jobs to allow him to show off their hardware through Tech Demos. Out of that Toy Story happened and they switched to a movie studio. Before the runaway success of Toy Story, Jobs had thought about selling Pixar to Microsoft/other companies.

You have to remember it was 1986 when Pixar was sold. As such Lucas and ILM were focused on physical special effects. At the time they didn't realize the future was digital special effects. It wasn't until 2005 or 2006 IIRC that ILM got out of the physical special effects business.

As for ILM, most of the major blockbuster movie franchises have had their effects done by ILM. It helps to be the largest special effects studio.

Its been a while since I read the article about Pixar but I still have the impression that Lasseter was always more animation minded and that ILM didn't have the resources at the time to focus on their special effects and animation so they spun them off

He doesn't even understand why we hate him Fing with HIS MOVIES. It's because he (a single person) is changing the memories of MILLION of people. I can barely bring myself to watch the original Star Wars movies any more because I kinda get a little sad seeing all that CGI crap that DOES NOTHING FOR THE STORY.

How is it that in the 80s, new Coke came out and within weeks they realized it was a mistake. The executives knew they screwed up when an old lady said she was mad. They asked when she last had a Coke. She said in her childhood. That she had it 3 times. And that they are very fond memories. She was actually upset because they changed something that was a fond memory of her childhood.

2 things that I think he really shouldn't have done:

[1] Reworked the original trilogy story. Touching up the special effects, etc is fine...but he should've left the damn story alone. What the hell was wrong with Han shooting first? Why the hell did he add "NOOOOOOOOOOOO" when the Emporer was frying Luke? And why the hell did he replace the original Vader at the end of Return of the Jedi? I seriously doubt those were things he wanted to do back in the 70's/80's.

[2] Jar Jar Binks - what the hell was he smoking when he thought this was a good idea to have him as a central character in a movie? I suspect Spielberg had something to do with it... [George - you need to put something in the movie kids will like!]

George Lucas didn't pioneer shit. He just surrounded himself with good people. If anything he knew how to market and manage. When he started taking full control over projects is when it became blissfully clear he didn't know what the FUCK he was doing, and it was the people he had around him that worked together who did amazing things for the time.

The problem is Coke sales dropped like stone. Lucas still makes shit loads of money even on the rerereleases of SW that he's fucked with.

He's basically roger rabbit in a SW film. It doesn't fit! Not that I've ever been a SW fan to begin with though.
I suppose so.
Looking at it that way, it was if the character would have been another extra amongst the cast, but was brought to front lines instead.
I'm not a hardcore SW fan so I suppose that would attribute to not disliking the character.

Word around the campfire is that Lucas can't re-release the original Star Wars because it would mean a lot of money goes to his ex wife. The versions that have been fucked with count as a new product somehow.

Disney does the same thing with its movies. If you make a movie and wait 20 years or whatever, it becomes public domain. To stop that from happening, you re-release it with bonus features or something and that extends the copyright.

dang. I knew it was Lucasfilm, but didn't realize that he directed it?

It looks pretty bad from the previews--just overly cloying, predictable, Hollywoodish and such. And it's what--the fifth film about this story?

George hasn't directed a good film since THX-1138, and maybe American Graffiti--and yeah, Star Wars sucks balls: deal with it--So I don't get this "failure with his recent films."

Empire and even Jedi were masterpieces compared to SW, and Lucas was/is a great storyteller, just god awful at putting these projects together. I think the problem is that he is a complete misanthrope. Not only does he not like working with actors, they don't seem to enjoy working with him. But more importantly, he is unable to put soul and humanity into his films. he creates wooden, boring characters that no one ever really gives a dick about.

Star Wars: Luke is good, Darth Vader bad. Han is cool/good--I think?
Empire/Jedi--I actually want to care about Luke and especially Han and holy shit--I somehow manage to sympathize with Vader!

Does anyone give a dick about any of the characters in any of the prequels? No of course you don't, and it's all because of Lucas.
