Yeah, zin underrates ANH pretty badly. Compared to TESB, it's not all that great, but it's still the second-best Star Wars film.

The Ewoks ruined RotJ. They were really the beginning of the end of Star Wars' credibility.

Will somebody please kill Adam Sandler?

For what? Making movies people like? Don't get me wrong I hate most of them too, but he's raking in more than I'll probably ever see. Can't really blame him...

Kids will laugh at almost anything. It takes talent to write something kids AND adults can laugh at.
??????
Uh... The Simpsons? They've managed to do this for at least a decade. I liked that show as a kid, then I started noticing some of the other jokes when I grew up.
"Didn't you wonder why you were getting checks for doing nothing?"
"I figured it was because the democrats were in power again."

I thought the Star Wars 4,5,6 movies were funny at times. Han Solo is dressed as a storm trooper and he's responding over the intercom. He says something like "we're...all.... fine... here.... now.." and it just seems so awkward.
Indiana Jones movies had their moments too.
There's a scene in the movie Robocop where he's responding to a hostage situation at city hall. I laughed as a kid when he throws the bad guy out the window and the camera man follows him as the guy falls to the ground.

I'll chip in to the donation pot for this.

Start an online petition saying he should kill himself. How would you feel if someone sent you a link to a petition saying you should kill yourself and it had over a million signatures on it?

This thread is like a sinking ship ... you know its going down but you keep serving the champagne like its going out of style.

Sir George remains relevant ONLY because people allow him to be.

STOP THE INSANITY!

Waggy and all the others wondering about the production of Red Tails, should watch this interview wit Lucas on The Daily Show from last week.

I would also suggest that if any of you haven't watch RedLetterMedia's review on the 4th Indiana Jones movie, I highly suggest watching it. I agree more with their assesment that Lucas, not Spielberg, is the reason that movie got made and why it was so horrible, unlike what the South Park fellas would have you think. Spielberg actually makes REALLY good movies, where Lucas got lucky with one franchise and now he's a pioneer of the film industry.

I'm conflicted about Spielberg. I started to watch The Goonies recently and realized it was just...#$%^ing HORRIBLE. I also thought Super 8 was terrible, mostly due to the Spielberg influences I saw.

...but he has made some excellent movies. I loved Jurassic Park as a kid, but probably wouldn't enjoy it as much any more. Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan were excellent. I think he's best at making period films (like war movies).

You should also watch RedLetterMedia's Half-in-the-Bag review of Red Tails.

George Lucas didn't pioneer shit. He just surrounded himself with good people. If anything he knew how to market and manage. When he started taking full control over projects is when it became blissfully clear he didn't know what the FUCK he was doing, and it was the people he had around him that worked together who did amazing things for the time.

Super 8 wasn't bad. Most of it was really good. It's about a group of friends and they all seem like real people. It just turns into shit at the end where it's about aliens and the two dads working together. It's like having really great sex then the woman says "I want a baby" and you're like "ahhhhhh!!!" and pull out as fast as possible.

I swear he has multiple personality disorder.
In the biz we call it drug addiction. There's the meth phase where the movies are about action and a bunch of shit happening that doesn't advance the plot, assuming there is a plot (Transformers 2). Then there's the MDMA phase where the characters have more depth (most good movies). Then there's the weed phase where you're left wondering why the hell that scene was left in the movie since it has nothing to do with anything (The Room). Then there's the alcohol phase where the character actions don't seem to make sense or their behavior is inconsistent (Star Wars prequels). Then there's the hangover phase where you try to justify your actions by saying it was designed to look like a B movie with a bunch of plot holes and shit (Lucas explaining the latest Indiana Jones movie). Then there's the drug withdrawal phase you blame everyone else (Red Tails, watch the Lucas interviews about how people who dont like it are racist). Then you get back on the wagon and start making crazy stuff again (Transformers 3).

edit: these are not all Lucas movies. They're just examples of movie types.

Spielberg didn't direct The Goonies.

God, that scene where Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan land on the planet and then meet up and first start talking to Jar-Jar... Makes me cringe every time...

Which is a shame, because the movie opened so bad-assly (?).

It almost makes you wonder if he sucks on purpose, because it seems like there would need to be a conscious effort to make two actors like Liam Neeson AND Ewan McGregor look so bad simultaneously. And of course Natalie Portman. Judging from that movie, you'd never guess she'd ever win an Oscar.

with this latest round of star wars spamming (endless cycle of video games, re-releases and product tie-ins) it looks like retirement has got old george busier than ever.

Dude, Goonies is one of the greatest movies of the 80's, and I enjoyed 8mm. Not a great movie, but it was certainly enjoyable to watch.

If you want to respect Spielberg, watch his very first movie, a made for TV film called Duel. It's fantastic.

At least I'm not the only one who thought Super 8 sucked. Super lens flair + child actors make for a bad movie.

The thing with Spielberg is he figures out how to present ideas in ways that nobody thought of before. The problem is, he has trouble binding those ideas together into a good movie. Jurassic Park still holds up well, but at the time used CGI to make dinosaurs REAL looking. It was the first movie to do that, and we take it for granted today.

With ET, he was the first to make a movie about an alien that was the hero of the show. That "outcast as a hero" theme has been used in movies ever since.

In Jaws, he was the first to use the "don't show the monster directly until the end" technique. It's now a horror movie standard.

He's done a lot, but his ideas don't always work.
