Word around the campfire is that Lucas can't re-release the original Star Wars because it would mean a lot of money goes to his ex wife. The versions that have been fucked with count as a new product somehow.

Disney does the same thing with its movies. If you make a movie and wait 20 years or whatever, it becomes public domain. To stop that from happening, you re-release it with bonus features or something and that extends the copyright.

err copyright is longer then 20 years as it is. thanks to Disney they are something like 120yrs now and they are wanting to make them longer.

I'm old enough to have been a kid for 4, 5, 6 and when the prequel came out I was very excited of course even though I was an adult. Were they better than the original? No. Were they good? Yes. The problem with them is that they had green screen acting and it was terrible. Nobody here is going to claim that Samuel Jackson is a bad actor but in star wars he was sub par. They all said it was incredibly frustrating and difficult. They would sit in a studio in front of a green screen and play pretend.

Jar Jar? Anyone who looked at it objectively could see that it was put in there for the kids. He said so himself back then. If you're looking at Jar Jar as some kind of adult entertainment maybe you need to go back and look at RTJ. Ewoks are not that cool as an adult as they were when I was a kid. If you're still not sure go and look at the made for TV Ewok movies. I stayed up late to watch them but today they are ridiculous to watch as an adult.

Everyone is entitled their own opinion but Star Wars is so bad ass that the previews made me more excited than most movies today do. When the preview for TPM came out people were trying to predict which movie it was going to show on and they predicted wrong so tons of us went and saw some half ass movie (something about space and hyperspeed and freezing in midair is all I remember) without the preview unfortionately.

He isn't done completely trashing his legacy yet.

I imagine he will retain standard copyright/IP for Star Wars for some what? 25-75 years after his death?

Not sure how this works with film, if the contract he had with Fox is old enough that allowed him a similar deal to what publishers would work out with authors (The Joyce family, for example, is about to lose the rights to all of the author's work, which is about to become public domain, 75 years after his death).

I totally see Lucas putting a stranglehold on how these films are presented, as long as his family retains rights long after his death.

lol.

Waggy and all the others wondering about the production of Red Tails, should watch this interview wit Lucas on The Daily Show from last week.

http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-january-9-2012/george-lucas?xrs=share_copy
I saw that interview and I wanted to punch Lucas when he was talking about how he wished Red Tails would be the middle movie of a trilogy. I do respect him for making the movie though and he's got a knack for good overall stories. The problem is that he sucks at writing and the finer details of making a movie. It also seems like he hired a weak dirctor/writers. Maybe that was out of choice, or his situation, but this movie probably needed a stronger script than anything else.

Don't know if it's been posted already, but Red Tails is getting hammered by critics. 33% on Rotten Tomatoes with an average review score of 5.2/10. Talk about going out on a low note. It is however not his lowest rated film. Howard the Duck still takes that crown. "Duck tits, wooo ooo"

Critics concensus says "despite a worthy fact-based story and obvious good intentions, Red Tails suffers from one-dimensional characters, corny dialogue, and heaps of clichés." A common complaint about George's recent films.

For purely comparison purposes, here's how Michael Bay's (similar) infamous Pearl Harbor did.

dang. I knew it was Lucasfilm, but didn't realize that he directed it?

It looks pretty bad from the previews--just overly cloying, predictable, Hollywoodish and such. And it's what--the fifth film about this story?

George hasn't directed a good film since THX-1138, and maybe American Graffiti--and yeah, Star Wars sucks balls: deal with it--So I don't get this "failure with his recent films."

Empire and even Jedi were masterpieces compared to SW, and Lucas was/is a great storyteller, just god awful at putting these projects together. I think the problem is that he is a complete misanthrope. Not only does he not like working with actors, they don't seem to enjoy working with him. But more importantly, he is unable to put soul and humanity into his films. he creates wooden, boring characters that no one ever really gives a dick about.

Star Wars: Luke is good, Darth Vader bad. Han is cool/good--I think?
Empire/Jedi--I actually want to care about Luke and especially Han and holy shit--I somehow manage to sympathize with Vader!

Does anyone give a dick about any of the characters in any of the prequels? No of course you don't, and it's all because of Lucas.

Really is amazing how forgettable the prequels are. I don't think I remember a single thing from all 3 films. There was some annoying kid, queen amalamadingdong, lots of disposable robots and that roger rabit/lizard half breed jar head thing.

I think he got tired of seeing that south park episode were he kept raping Indiana Jones. Jar Jar is when he jumped the shark. He is not relative any more.

don't forget that the special edition rereleases of the original films in the 90s brought about changes that foreshadowed Lucas' downfall, such as Greedo shooting first...

Jar Jar may have been the ice berg, but the tip was clearly showing even prior to the actual sinking

FYI this is where I stopped reading, after that your opinion became invalid

I thought the same thing. The first one I saw was Empire and I liked it. I was a little kid so it was not hard to impress me. Then I saw Jedi and I liked that one too. When I saw the first one, Star Wars, I was disappointed. It seemed painfully slow and it didn't feel like it was going anywhere. My best friend's dad said Star Wars was the first movie he walked out of.

I really want to see Red Tails anyway. I've longed for classic dogfights using Industrial Light and Magic caliber treatment.
I was hoping Pearl Harbor would have that, it did...but it totaled 30 seconds. Not worth the 3 hr movie.

whats the backlash on Red tails? the Tuskegee airmen were amazing and it is a story worth telling.

I'm offended the dialogue sounds like came right from a 1990s black fraternity, mixed in with dubstep. If you are going to do a period piece, everything needs to be period including the dialogue delivery. The whole "making it relevant" to today's generation is a disservice to the true airmen.

I bet the word "homie" and a step contest play heavily in the story.

And just FYI George, historically accurate black movies can be huge successes. Ever heard of Glory? One of the greatest movies ever.
