z77 is the better choice because it has native usb 3.0, Sata 6.0 on chip, support for ivy bridge(future upgrades) , pcie 3.0, SSD caching.

The overall performance of the two chipsets in the real world is pretty similar and if you already had a z68 board I don't see the reason to upgrade.

If you're buying new though I would go with the newer chipset.

Do you mean Sata 3.0 (6Gb/s)? Or is this something newer, because they both have that? AFAIK z68 has IB support with bios updates pretty standard. USB/PCIe 3 might come in handy in the future..

Are those all the differences?

If you are buying new, Z77 without question.

Thats not how I go about buying new things (nor should anyone). I ask many questions

The z68 and the z77 both have usb 3.0 and sata 6 the difference is the z77 has those native to the chipset means you don't need a separate controller. It's also built for Ivy Bridge so it will better support an upgrade path.
The differences aren't mind blowing or drastic just minor to make things work more smoothly.

Again i'll reiterate if you have a z68 board keep it. If not get a z77

Thank you for clearing this up!

I should mention that Im going for a i2500k. Im unsure if Ill find a z77(or z75), and if a z68 comes my way for exceptionally cheap without bursting into flames too often Id like to weigh the pros and cons. My budget is $200 firm max so I may have to make sacrifices in terms of used and age of chipset

What is it you are doing with your computer than you need to buy such old tech? Do you have to have 4 cores? ...or are you trying to OC?

The 2500K is the best performance per $ per core out there followed closely by the 3750K, regardless of it being old tech. The difference between the 68 and 77 seem to be minimal and allow me to weigh the want for something like USB3 PCIe3 and ssdcacheing (none of witch I use) against the possible less expencive 68z if I came across one.

Why would I get a z series if I wasnt going to OC

No real world difference it seems for your purposes. Both are older tech, as socket 1150 is here. Basically find your best deal if you are not going Haswell and socket 1150.

You didn't say... but I made that assumption. Hope you get a good chip!

I've tried to justify upgrading out of my 2500K/Z68 setup... my CPU isn't even that good of an OC'er (only 4.1GHz stable) but I just can't do it. I would really love native USB3 like my HTPC's B75 board, but with socket 1150 here I can't really justify putting any money into a 1155 system.

Yeah its the same for me. If I found a z68 for $20 less than a 77, I couldn't justify that $20.

Basically going as low as possible to get the intel working. Then maybe Id upgrade the mobo in a couple years to get a 5Ghz+ OC out of it from homefully at least 4. Found a z77 for $50 that wasnt horrible so its all good.
