If you don't have any credit card or other revolving debt, save it.

ROTH IRA allows you place after-tax funds now, and get the tax free deductions when you retire.

Traditional IRA allows pre-tax earnings to be placed in a fund, taxable upon withdrawl.

Traditional is only allowed if your work place does not offer a Retirement plan.

You may make a one-time withdrwal from your IRA for you firt home purchase or college educationd for the kid IIRC with no penalty.

The economy already IS pretty good (not great, but good). But still, you should put it all away. Do you have a 401k through your company? You can contribute to that. The penalties are so high for withdrawing it, you won't be able to spend it. You'll have to save it.

I have a 403b account

pretax investment.

they match me dollar for dollar up to 50% of my salary.

I was putting 20% in, but had to drop it to 5%.

Open up a mutual fund account and invest it into an index fund of the S&P 500. If you're like most people though that advice went in one ear and out the other, so enjoy your new toy(s).

Unfortunately 42% of people don't agree with you, and when they change jobs they cash that bad boy out.

perhaps I will save 800, spend 800 on a handgun>?

now the real question is, new? or used?
A bonus is "extra". Spend it !

I don't have a home theatre (dont have the room), but I will be moving soon...perhaps I can put it away until I can make room? I was looking at projectors too.

Hah, small world, my grandfather worked for kaiser up here in PA until AKW bought em out. Kaiser is screwing everyone on their retirment pensions now.

Problem is, HMO's are mostly state governed. Kaiser in PA might be a totally different beast than that of Cali...

though...

I'm not surprised they screwed em.

I dont know the exact details of how they pulled it off, but hes getting about 15% of what his pension should have been as a result of a lawsuit. It would have been nothing.

Luckily he has a 2nd pension through AKW.
