Getting another stick of ram..

I've ordered my parts from various online companies, and I've got one question:

I've ordered a Geil Ultra 1GB stick of ram (w/ blue heatspreaders - I'd post a link, but school's having DNS problems..can't get to newegg) from newegg.com.

I was wondering how much another stick of 1gb ram would give me in terms of performance because of dual channel. I've outlined ~1000 for my new rig, and I have some extra cash to spare. I was just wondering exactly how much performance I could get.

Thank you for your advice

in all actuallity all you really need is 1gb of ram... unless you are doing some hard-core photoshop, or maya6 or 3dsMax... you get the idea.. for gaming you really only need 1-1.5 gigs tops

If you are talking about P4 then yes.
P4 loves dual channel.

2x512 would have been the way to go.

dual channel helps for both intel and amd...but dual channel 2gb is overkill...you need max about 1.5gb for everyday usage...

i only have 512mb, and ive never maxed out before. i dont do any crazy things on my pc, just gaming and internet. i think 2x512 is a lot better than 1024mb, and especially 2x1024

2x512 is better than 2x1024?

O_O

I might just get that second stick, just because ram prices are so damn low.

Of course, if you have the money 2x1024 is your best bet. However, most games don't see any advantage from that much RAM. 1.5gig would be fine - AMD boards don't benefit that much from dual channel, because they already have so much memory bandwidth to begin with. AMD boards are much more sensitive to Latency than they are to bandwidth, so really you'd be better off with 1024mb of low latency ram, be it 2x512 or 1x1024. I would advise 1x1024, then another 1024 whenever funds are readily available.
