It's time to see my baby girl again (wooo the whole summer!) Problem is to help her with the last days of moving stuff around at the end of this semester I really need to get up there this next weekend. I'll be driving the trip from southern Georgia to her place south of South Bend, hopefully all in one day starting out about 4AM. The plan is to do like last year and drive into Alabama and hit I-65, then cruise I-65 all they way up to Indianapolis, take 465 around Indianapolis, then take US31 the last 95miles up. Problem is the Indy 500 this weekend. My dad thinks that I won't even be able to approach Indy on Saturday (my original leave date). So I'm hoping to push back to Friday, but I seeing as I've never been around there during this date, I don't know how crowded we're actually talking. Mind you I will be rest stopped, have had dinner/snack, whatever before reaching indy, and have NO plans of stopping anywhere around Indy, and really don't want to stop until at least north of Kokomo. If I can't find a new route I'm stuck till Tuesday and that's going to push a few things me and her want to do to the back burner.

Going my Gmaps, I did have a new plan, and that was t go east of Indy completely. I would take 65 up to just south of Seymour, IN, where I would then get off on exit 50A on US50, then immediately onto US31. At the intersecion of IN46/IN9 and US31, I would get on IN9 and ride it up to IN67/IN9, all the way to I-69N, then ride it up to exit 59 where I woulld get on IN22/US35, and ride that all the way back to Kokomo (about 30 miles), where I would get back on US31 as normal. This sounds very convoluted, and plus tacks on near 1.5 hours of driving time.

Is taking 465 really going to be that bad this weekend? Would taking 465 vary depending on going west or east bound?

Please help me save my weekend!

Just take 465 around the east portion of the city. You should be alright. It's Indy, not Atlanta.

Damn, i thought it was supposed to be .

My dad swears that IN will become a crowded pig pen with no room to even put it in reverse. Last year I cleared IN in under 30minutes via 465NE. Dad says though that with incoming traffic I won't even be able to move through the interstate. I told dad that with the race being on Saturday, and me going through that area about 4/5PMish in the evening, shouldn't the interstate be fairly open Saturday evening?

As long as you go around the city you will be just fine. On my way from madison to cincinatti one summer I headed thru indy. Had no idea it was the same day as the 500. It. Took. Forever.

That doesn't sound right I only took about 30 minutes on 465. It's only a 20 mile run from one end to the other for my route.

Just take I-65 through downtown Indy, or go around the east side if you're worried about hitting race traffic. Traffic through downtown shouldn't be too bad, especially in the evening.

Whatever you do, DO NOT take I-465 around the west side. As others have said, the track is on the west side of Indy. Plus, there's a ton of construction over there right now - you'll be stuck forever if you go around the west side.

I have a hard time believing this will only take 1.5 extra hours - more like 3 or 4 if you're lucky. Most of these are crappy 2-lane farm roads, so you'll probably get stuck behind a tractor most of the way.

465 will be fine on Saturday. Sunday will have increased traffic, but just take the east loop and you'll be fine.

HAHA that reminds me of last year, being my first time outside the state of Georgia on my own. 465 east was under construction, and I was completely lost on getting through there. This was on top of the butterflies knowing she was only 90 miles away (this was my first meeting her and many ATOT's were waiting for my disappearance by Chris Hansen ). But besides that, I ended up loosing lane track and went *between* two construction cones at 70mph running through a construction zone and using the ramp nearby as a turn off to get onto 31. That was hilarious..not..but still yeah, i was worried that construction would be happening this year too.

I'm just going to tell dad I'm taking 465NE and leave it at that, I don't think this traffic will be bad as he's making it out to be. I could handle ATL on Labor Day, I think I can handle Indy on a busy day. I won't go anywhere towards the west side.

You think Saturday is a better day than Friday?

What doesnt sound right? I came in on 74 and missed my exit so I ended up going straight past all kinds of raceday traffic. As in right past the raceway.

oh I see, that's the difference. I thought you meant you took forever staying on 465.
