GF 6800 seemingly overheating

Under "Temperature settings" in the nvidia control panel thing, it's showing up as 153 with a core shutdown temp of 135. The comp runs stable, until I try running say 3dmark (haven't installed any games yet), at which point it'll get through one test and reboot the computer on the 2nd test.

Can this reported temp possibly be right, or is it just reporting the temp wrong, in which case, what's causing my freezes?

That reading has to be wrong, the card would have probably melted if it was running at 153C.

Wouldn't Nvidia's "Core Shutdown Threshold" thing shut it down anyway? And the temp doesn't seem to fluctuate at all, stays at 153 all the time, reaffirming that it must be wrong. Which is good, but also bad, b/c now I have to figure out what's actually causing my reboots.

What power supply do you have? Try disconnecting unused PCI cards, optical and hard drives or anything else you don't need to get into Windows and stress the thing. If disconnecting hardware helps, you're in the market for a new PSU.

EDIT: What's your CPU temp as well?

CPU is @ 47, my PSU is a cheaper generic one. I'd have to check to see what it is. (it's a computer build for a friend, otherwise I'd be using something higher quality)

Though, if it was the PSU, wouldn't it kick out even during the first test? And that still doesn't account for my crazy temps.

17A on the 12V rail is a bit skimpy, especially with a 6800 series video card. I'd try disconnecting any unnecessary devices and running a combination of rthdribl and Prime95 to see if it reboots then. If so, I'm afraid your friend will be shelling out the cash for a new PSU.

k, I've tried the card in a different computer (DFI Infinity, 2500mobile, 512 megs Kingston HyperX), Where it also freezes. There I get some sort of blue screen with white letters talking about how Windows was shutting down because of an error (Winxp pro, sp2)

I've tried swapping ram between the computrs, and still it freezes up in 3dmark2001. Specifically, it freezes midway through the "high quality' test of the truck.

I've also tried unplugging all my extra fans, optical drives, floppy, etc. no luck.

Another update. this thing seems to work fine when I'm not running any 3d application. As soon as I start something like 3dmark, or any 3d game, the computer reboots or hangs. I'm using the newest nvidia drivers (61.something), so that shouldn't be the problem. It's a fresh install of winxp, so there should be no driver conflictions.

And what was the other system's with the Lanboy PSU ?

i would recommend a higher watt psu with that kinda hardware
